Noir Clips

Re: Noir Clips

I must've missed it, but what system did you use for your 16:9 - squeeze, crop or anamorphic?

That is some top-notch work there - the 100a continues to impress me when in the hands of an experienced shooter. Thanks for sharing those scenes.

Re: Noir Clips

Hi Taylormade: Pardon my ignorance, but what does SAG stand for. Really great work by the way!

WOW!

That is VERY impressive. If this is not a motivator I don't know what is. 8)

(of coarse you need to put a value on your TOP NOTCH skills!) :)

Re: Noir Clips

RT, have you thought about expanding this into a feature? Just thinking if I asked this earlier.

Got to see the clips. Great work and thanks for telling us how you did the effects. Let us know when the dvd is out and I'll buy one.

Re: Noir Clips

Gary, this one plays great at 18 minutes. I have another feature script set in the late forties that I'd really like to make someday. The look would be the same, but obviously there are more characters and much more plot.

My next short is "Eddie's Night Out", a little morality tale about a killer who escapes from the State Pen and the price he eventually pays for his freedom.

:o

Wow, this is so incredibly inspiring!!! Great job! Did you a wide angle lense for any of your shots? If so, what did you use? In particular, the shot of the guys in the car... nice angle, and composition... really good stuff!

Re: Noir Clips

Just the stock DVX100 lens. It's wide enough for just about anything I'm working on. Notice how it holds focus across the two actors even under low light. I shot the car scene at f2.8 with just two lights. A 650 Chimira about 12 feet in front of the car aimed throught the windshield and a 650 with diffusion fifteen feet behind the car aimed through the (very small) back window. No side lights. The street lights provided fill on the buildings in the background. Since color temp wasn't an issue, I could mix lights with no problem - one of the big advantages of B&W. I just set up at window level and shot through the driver and passenger windows. Lav mikes were clipped to the sun visors for sound. A simple set up. We shot the entire sequence in about 40 minutes.

I shot two takes of the two shot from the driver's side, then three takes of the fat cop from the same position, but zooming in for a medium closeup. All takes covered the entire scene.

Then I moved to the other side of the car and shot a reverse two shot (two takes) and then zoomed in for the closeup of the thin cop (three takes - I had him change his delivery on one line). The only lighting change was to mask off a bit of the Chimira that was spilling on the side of the building visible behind the actors. I toned that down and shot.

A quick lighting change brought the Chimira closer and slightly higher and to the side - aimed down through the front windshield. The backlight was moved to angle into the passenger side window. Then I shot the closeup of the Thompson with this setup.

Finally we moved the Chimira about twenty feet off and aimed it at the front of the car. The diffused 650 was placed off to the right as a backlight. The streetlights did the rest. We shot the car pulling up and then the two actors hopping out. End of shoot.

The only problems encountered were an occasional modern car driving by and several loud passers-by on the street that messed up one take. Good, professional actors who give you consistant takes, and perform the same physical actions within each take, make cutting scenes like this a breeze. I got home at 9PM, loaded the footage into the Avid and had this sequence cut in about an hour.

Re: Noir Clips

Sorry, Rich, these were posted by Ryan Smith on his site. It's out of my hands. It's strange, though, even my old computer will play them - the one I have hooked up to a phone connection Internet service.

RT[/quote]

Sorry, just trying to sound provocative ;) I like Avid and yes it's the editor the pros use (supposedly!)

I love these clips. POST MORE! PLEEEEASE!!! It's brilliant to see high-rez high quality clips for a change!.

Rich - these are Mpeg files - could that a reason you're having trouble?

Re: Noir Clips

I like Avid, but that's the NLE I started out on so I know the shortcuts. I've used Final Cut and Blade and they both work fine, but I'll stick with Avid for now.

More clips will have to wait as I'm sure I've maxed out Ryan's band width and patience.
