Re: Noir Clips
My concept of edge lighting is a rim light that suggests an object but leaves most of it in darkness. The warehouse scenes in Stakeout are mostly black, with just a few items picked out in minimal lighting - usually from the side - to suggest the size of the place without using a massive lighting setup. Shafts of light and extra shadows added in Photoshop completed the look. Many of the cameramen and directors of noir came from the post WW1 German expressionalist school. They brought the darkness, the shadows and the feeling of doom to American films of the forties.
The more you shoot, the better you get to know the capibilities and limitations of your camera and the more confident you become. Once you pass the stage where you just get it technically right and start to make actual artistic decisions based on your knowledge is the stage where you start to become a real film-maker.
