I'm sure most of us have either heard or read the argument on HDV not handling motion very well, and in theory it sounds great and makes sense, but in reality, other than the most extreme of circumstances, how many of us have TRULY seen examples of the image breaking down?
Just like we hear from pro-HVX advocates about understanding the cameras strengths and limitations and accordingly working around those issues to bring out the best in the image, so also can the argument be made regarding the use of HDV. Meaning, would I use the format for high impact sports or events with lots of motion? Probably not. But if I was using it for documentaries, travel videos, etc. then I think HDV is entirely suitable.
I spent a good week with the Z1U when it first came out, at a time when I was taking a small break from the freelance world and working in a known rental house.
I played with it a lot and shot a lot tests.
Just a simple panning of the camera with the cars driving down the street produced the typical video jaggies down anything at a diagnol...like cars' A and C pillars.
That among many other factors (horrendous and fake looking 24 "cineframe") made me decide the Sony was a TURD.
Sad, because I was seriously looking to buy one before they came on, and I still really like the physical design aspect of the camera and the great looking LCD on it.
But if looks like a turd, and smells like turd...its a turd.
