No HVX for me

Playing devil's advocate for a second. I'm sure most of us have either heard or read the argument on HDV not handling motion very well, and in theory it sounds great and makes sense, but in reality, other than the most extreme of circumstances, how many of us have TRULY seen examples of the image breaking down?

Just like we hear from pro-HVX advocates about understanding the cameras strengths and limitations and accordingly working around those issues to bring out the best in the image, so also can the argument be made regarding the use of HDV. Meaning, would I use the format for high impact sports or events with lots of motion? Probably not. But if I was using it for documentaries, travel videos, etc. then I think HDV is entirely suitable.

I spent a good week with the Z1U when it first came out, at a time when I was taking a small break from the freelance world and working in a known rental house.

I played with it a lot and shot a lot tests.

Just a simple panning of the camera with the cars driving down the street produced the typical video jaggies down anything at a diagnol...like cars' A and C pillars.

That among many other factors (horrendous and fake looking 24 "cineframe") made me decide the Sony was a TURD.

Sad, because I was seriously looking to buy one before they came on, and I still really like the physical design aspect of the camera and the great looking LCD on it.

But if looks like a turd, and smells like turd...its a turd.

Yeah, it has its use, and its place in the camera world.

I personally, just don't put the format on any kind of pedestal.

I know whe are talking HDV and not just camera specific but I've said before and I'll say it again...I'd rather shoot SD 24fps of a DVX, then use the Z1U.

Honestly, neither do I. I prefer Panasonic's approach. I'm just trying get others to think outside the box and not buy completely into the party line without critical observation.

Read through everything you have written, and that is pretty much how you have come off with your statements.

All that coming from the guy who said let a 20 year old kid sell shooting projected images of film shot onto a HVX as a professional service. And even offered the even more lame silly idea of painting a piece of board white to use as a screen....rofl....

yeah, read through my posts and see how many times i said "bang for buck" which is different from absolute price. i would think a big time hollywood filmmaker, a "somebody" as you call it, would understand the distinction. and I can tell you're bigtime, afterall, you're extolling the virtue of being successful enough to afford a 10k camera package.

XDCam......BARF...what a horrendous...and yet again Sony...proprietary format...Last thing I want is a moving laser burning while I am shooting. No thank you.

Next to IMX...sony keeps coming up with field proven whiffers.

And believe me I used to be the biggest sony fanboy.

You can choose to spin this however you wish, or attempt to put words in my mouth.

Fact is you changed the meaning of "bang for the buck" to straight up cheap when you started mentioned all your "what ifs."

It is not my fault if you don't think or can't explain your examples clearly enough to convey whatever it is you really meant.

I know plenty of Assistant Cameramen , who make very nice money, that have the virtue of being successful enough to afford a 10k camera package for shooting projects on the side, or for renting out, or to try and help make the leap to being a DP while still making their current living as an AC. So, whats your point?

I have never claimed I was "bigtime" and I am not on here to brag about my credits.
