but not having the flip feature on the HVX is a bummer.
Can you name any other camera that does it? Why single out the HVX? None of 'em can do it.

Besides, if Letus and Wayne are making self-flipping adapters already anyway, that's what you'd want -- having an LCD flip still means the footage is being recorded upside down. If the Letus Flip works well, then you'd have the image right-side-up in the viewfinder as well as right-side-up in the recording.

I'm not saying it's a good thing that the HVX doesn't flip it, but I am saying that nobody else does either. If the others did it, and Panasonic didn't, then I could see a point for being disappointed with them.

Plus if we fell under the idea that "Can you name any other camera that does it?"
than we would not have a 24fps camera. Because if memory serves me the panasonic was the first(in our price point), but why should they- no one else did.

With digial video becoming common place on TV ( and pretty soon in cinema too I'll wager) audiences are becoming accustomed to seeing 24p video and recognizing it as such. This makes shallow DOF and multiple lens choices more important than ever to achieve film quality visuals (especially when we want to submit material to potential distributors who are looking for excuses to close flood gates of material submitted to them).

Short sighted move by panasonic here. Bad enough the lens isn't interchangeable.
But if there is no image flip native on the camera and the magnet on the LCD won't work, I'm holding off buying this camera until I see a model revision which does. I'd rather spend my money on renting a camera for a solitary project than owning one which will limit my end goals in this fashion. Why waste the money now?

A bit overkill on the backlash there, in my opinion. It's not a deal breaker. The more I think about it, the more I think it will improve my approach with the camera. Run and Gun with shallow DOF is a pretty rough gig. I think the on-camera monitor will help keep things in perspective on how to go for control on a shoot.

Forging ahead...

Makes sense.

But if I'm going to work on improving on an approach with a camera, I'll do it with one that costs less. Don't forget the additional post costs for shooting HD. They are considerable on top of the camera and P2 cards price point alone. Also don't forget there is no HD delivery system like a DVD yet.

Dont' get me wrong, the camera is amazing and I'm thrilled with the image. But with companies and competitors coming out with new models every other year, it makes more sense to wait. Cannon has the flip feature I want (plus interchangeable lenses) which makes this either a choice or an oversight on the part of Panasonic. But panasonic has the DVCpro quality of image I prefer. If I had a choice, I'd always choose the panasonic for a shoot. I think it's the better camera. But I'll rent it for a solitary project, not buy it to own if it doesn't meet my needs (again, with my larger end goals in mind).

I'll hold onto my money and wait to see what comes down the pipe. HVX-200A anyone?

It appears that the XL-H1 has incorporated flip:
Yes, but that's a cruel tease to those who want it. The XL-H1 flip feature works ONLY if the stock lens is removed. Which means you'd need a mini35 or a comparable relay lens attached, which makes the XLH1's flip feature completely useless for the guys who are trying to use low-cost adapters.

EDIT: Although, reading through the manual, they don't seem to be specifying that. That's what Canon told me during resfest, but I wonder if they changed that between then and production... hmmm...

You make some good points here. It is still early. Maybe people need to put down the Panasonic crack pipe and spend some time in detox for a bit. I think the camera is great too but why with all the information around 35mm adapters and this camera being praised as an "indie filmmakers dream come true" (don't quote me on that..it's the jist of what people have said) would they not add this function to the camera? Is it a technological impossibility? That's fair enough. I don't think it is though and perhaps if enough people discuss this issue, it will appear on the next version. I'm all for buying an external monitor but if the camera isn't sitting on a tripod, it's a bit of a pain having a monitor attatched to the camera when you're trying to "run and gun" or whatever the kids are calling it these days. That being said, this camera is not an eng style anyways and good luck trying to pull focus in a live event. I would never put a 35mm adapter in a live situation where I needed to capture a large quantity of subject quickly while trying to look through a monitor on top the camera. Actually I just might.

Seasons Greetings to everyone on this board. I hope your holidays are great. Cheers.:)

I'm not sure if this is true for powerbooks, but on desktop models, if you go to system preferences>displays,
there is a pull down menu called 'rotate' right under the detect displays button.

That might help you out. . . ?
thanks Felix,
dont have that option on the PB...oh well...
that's a bummer for using a small Powerbook as recording device AND monitor,
but
I am not convinced yet that there is not a workable solution yet...
I might have to mod a small PB to be a monitor (and storage device)
seems like the best.
While I will be using a 35mm adaptor (probably G35) this wont be an issue to prevent me from getting the HVX

I tend to forget that with this camera and a Mac Pany has made High Def Such an easy workflow for me

BTW...When using Just the Camera (for run & Gun) why will not a small mirror DuctTaped at a 45 degree angle to work?

IMPORTANT: This will NOT work. I wish it could, but a mirror only flips vertically, not horizontally, so your sense of vertical reality will be accurate, but you will be guessing if you should go left or right, unless you can fix your brain to think "left is right, right is left". I'll be getting an on-camera TFT monitor real soon. :)

If that is the case (the cruel tease) then I have even less interest in that camera than I did before. The new cannon was never really an option for me as I think the footage I've seen looks like an XL2 in HD. Still looks very videoish to me.

I was just pointing out that Cannon is reported to have the feature we are discussing showing it's not impossible to achieve. It's a choice. And if what you're saying is true about the stock lens needing to be removed, then that too was a choice which is even more annoying. It screams of them wanting to make sure you purchase their lenses to make more money.

The bottom line for me is these companies are being short sighted. If they want my money, they need to give me what I want within reason. I don't see the image flip on the LCD alone (not the footage being recorded) to be unreasonable.

Like I said- HVX-200A for me. I'll rent the HVX200 in the mean time if my production(s) are ready to get into gear until then.

I'm pretty sure the LCD will be a great asset. It has under-scan and focus assist, two very important aspect to a shoot. If it doesn't have a flip, I'll still get the cam if it is up to par... that is does what the DVX does and more. The features are just too good to pass up. Since the internal LCD controls most likely have mirror and normal and flips anyway when you reverse the LCD, I don't think it would take a great deal of tech know how to have that feature as a setting in the LCD controls. I say this without any expertise on such matters, so, take it with a grain of salt.

I guess at the root of this is a very simple request, which was made months ago and would in my opinion make many people happy. I dont want to have to rig a camera to make it happen. I can record HD onto a memory card in native widescreen, but flip the image in the viewfinder is not possible. Just seems silly.

Im a huge fan of the DVX, I own two and plan on buying two or three HVXs. I do not want to have to consider the Canon over such a simple feature but honestly getting Shallow DOF is most important to me right at this point.

I would honestly prefer to see an adaptor I liked that didnt flip, this would be ideal because of post flip issue as well.

Barry, I saw your inquiry over at DVinfo and the report back from XL-H1 owners that it does NOT flip with the stock lens attached. Man, that is perhaps even worse. You know "something's" there, it was even closer to being a reality, and... NOPE!

Do you have a monitor picked out yet? I'm going to need to do this, but I haven't seen the latest options.

Thanks!
