No flip screen on the HVX

Official word is: No flip feature from panasonic. That's from Jan.
There is no internal menu item to flip the screen, that's correct. None of these cameras offer that, and the HVX is no different.

Barry why would you not be able to use the magnet?
I don't know. I'd figure you should be able to.

I don't have that same kind of magnet here anymore, so I tried it with something else, and indeed it didn't work. Weird.

But for clarification, yes the LCD does flip when you rotate it forward, yes it does flip properly when you fold it back against the camera body (with screen facing outwards), etc.

I hear people complain about the pro35's image on HD?
I've used the Pro35 on a CineAlta, and yes there's noticeable image softening.

We also used the mini35 on the HD100, and there was noticeable image softening.

I guess there is no chance for a software upgrade down the road?
I'd say no chance. There's never been a software upgrade to any prosumer priced camera before, excepting only the JVC HD100 (which was built with EEPROMS to allow firmware updates).

Does anyone know how effected P2 would be to a magnet?
Don't know for sure, but I would assume it would be completely impervious to it. We should ask Jan though, before I go testing it...

I really wish it flipped feature on its own. I hate playing with magnets especially now that we are using P2, you never know. My dad zapped his PowerBook HD with his iSight camera magnet. I guess there is no chance for a software upgrade down the road?

I'm pretty sure, you just had an unlucky coincidence. Magnets have no effect on Hard Drives. A seagate engineer said that it would take a magnet strong enough to suck the iron out of your blood to cause any damage. He's probably right since all the modern fancy harddrives are driven by highspeed electric motors. If you don't understand why this makes magnets safe, go read an article on electric motors.

The only damage a magnet could cause to a p2 card would be if it was strong enough to dislodge one of the SD cards from it's physical seat. Not likely.

Hopefully someone will figure out a new hack that can flip the image in the viewfinder. The magnet trick was such a great solve. Sad to see it's not available.

these 35mm people (G35 l35 micro35) should build a strap-on-LCD mirror (L shaped - slanting towards the bottom) - more like a foldable statium seat.

that should invert the image...

- 2"x3" mirror from your girlfriends make-up purse
- DuckTaped at a 45 degree angle to the flip out screen.

1) Someone correcting Barry on how something in DVX works
2) Panasonic not listening to its customers, and jinxing an useful shortcut, crippling a very handy feature.
Oh, I'm not trying to correct anyone -- simply offering a possible explanation. What I suggested seems plausible from what I've read and what I've seen tinkering with other cameras. But I've never used the DVX itself, so I may be wrong. I would hope someone corrects me if I am.

I certainly wouldn't expect Panasonic to make a change like this (if that is the case) to deliberately inconvenience its users. More likely a practical decision in sourcing parts or accommodating some design-for-manufacturability concern.

This is from someone (I think Tanner) in another forum:

"Serious Magic is working on an update for DV Rack that will capture HVX footage, and can flip the image in the monitor, but not the recorded image. Cineform's Connect HD can flip the image as it captures, but as of now only supports HDV. I'm sure they will come out with an update, or someone out there will write something simple to do this."

I don't want to state the obvious....but once the cameras are shipping perhaps those who aren't afraid to void the warranty will be able to physically flip the panel within the housing?!
Assuming all the mounting points are symetrical. A long shot, but who knows?

Sacrilege!!!

So,,
I will be using a 35mm adaptor (so I need to fliip the image)
and I will need longer recording times than the P2

So I'm toying with ways to configuring a 12" powerbook (or the new lightweight Intel iBooks) to do both.
I had an older powerbook rigged up to the Vest on my Steadicam last night and it felt quite alright!.. A smaller/lighter PB would work perfect for ingesting the video
and the monitor works for checking the image
now I wonder how I could Flip the desktop (or the log and capture window) as a solution for the 35mm?

Any ideas?

I'm not sure if this is true for powerbooks, but on desktop models, if you go to system preferences>displays,
there is a pull down menu called 'rotate' right under the detect displays button.

That might help you out. . . ?

It may even be simpler than that. I recently took apart a dead Sony Handicam to see what I could salvage. Within the rotation joint for the LCD panel there was a small metal cam and a microswitch. All someone would need to do is rewire the leads from the microswitch to a small slide switch added to the LCD enclosure. Then, one could trigger the LCD flip manually at any time, in any position.

Very early on I and others suggested that the HVX 200 have a flip on the monitor. That Panasonic hasn't included this feature is a shame!

there must be some technical reason behind it... Jan has been pretty responsive.... but we asked waaaay back in April/May....

and still as of Dec 15th... 2 weeks before the release - they are still tweaking the camera.....

so much for locking down the camera in oct, nov, dec....

I'm just curious, how did you know they're still tweaking? Do you know somebody on the inside?...

I agree, such a simple request that has great benefits for those using a 35 adaptor. Im so excited to get a G35 but not having the flip feature on the HVX is a bummer. Cant from what I understand even use a magnet......
If your goal is to create a camera that is 24fps for the look of film, why wouldnt you accomidate the second need which is Shallow DOF. The best way of doing this would have been acknowledging the demend for adaptor use. Funny to me we have P2, SD slot, 4 channel audio, native widescreen, wider lens etc. but simple flip wasnt figured in.

Easy to say use a monitor but for my doc work im run and gun.

Oh well I guess if it wasnt this than we would be upset about something else..... human nature.
