Ninja's on Ebay.

It includes two batteries. The only thing you need to buy are the hard drives which are pretty cheap.

I never trust working with hard drives on set, and SSDs are expensive. That's where the extra cost would come in. Hard drives can fail or corrupt footage when bumped, or even from vibrations. SSD, Flash, or tape only!

The thing is you can pick up 64 or 100GB SSD's now pretty cheaply

This is really kind of exciting. Mostly I'm in the -it seems too good to be true- camp, but if this thing delivers I'm getting one for sure. But I'd rather let someone else pull the trigger first and report back. LOL

Boy do I hope it ROCKS! :)

I'll be putting it through it's paces. The retailer here in Toronto said I could take it out for a test drive when I comes in next week.

Looks to ship this week.

So this is half the price of the Aja Ki Pro mini, seems to do exactly the same thing minus the SMPTE. Am I missing anything else for that $1k?

Yes, your missing the fact that the ki pro will accept and record 10-bit, which is vastly more noticeable and advantageous under heavy grading over the difference of 4:2:0 to 4:2:2 when your source is a decent sensor putting out 10-bit with a solid signal to noise ratio. With your af100 however no, you are not missing anything, as I believe it's sdi port is 8-bit only

The original question was if there is any difference with Ki Pro Mini and the Ninja. The answer is that there technically should be no quality difference as they both record 10 ProRes. True, only 8 bit is being spit out of the AF100, but there is still a huge advantage recoding directly ProRes as apposed to converting from AVCHD. For example, underexposed areas, can get heavily artifacted using AVCHD. The biggest other big advantage is getting the 4:2:2 color and skipping the converting codec stage. $1000 for these features is not unreasonable.

Definitely, and 995 is a great price. I just wanted to clarify that the aja accepts 10 bit via sdi, which is definitely a separating feature. Not to mention it's cross conversion from the sdi in to the hdmi out and the hdmi in to sdi out. The ninja will do 10-bit over hdmi, however I don't know of a single camera outputting 10-bit via hdmi

Yes very good points to note.

In the video, Jeromy mentions some surprises with the firmware upgrade in April. Any guesses what it will be?

Looking forward to the HDSDI version. Can't really trust the HDMI out- it cuts out when you bump the cable. Also, how do you do proper 24p without HDSDI?

Quick question. What are the limitations for windows NLE's (CS5 or Vegas) using the Ninja and prores? Is the workflow supported for windows?

You will be able to playback ProRes, but not write to ProRes. Practically this means that you will be able to edit the material from the Ninja no problem - just output to a different format.
