C100: Ninja Star and the C100: Forever together?

So I'm confused, can I use any fast CF card in there or do they have to be a specific CFast card?

CFast is the size of CF, but has different pins and a different interface (SATA instead of IDE, I think?).

So no, CFast only. But any reasonably fast CFast card is fine.

Sorry guy still love my Black Magic hyper deck 2 build like a tank plus two options of input and output .

Different form factor, the main reason besides price why the Star is interesting to C100 shooters. Although you probably could screw the HyperDeck under the C100...

Hope this isn't a dumb question. Is there any great advantage to recording in prores vs transcoding after the fact from an AVCHD file? I'm guessing there must be, but would love to hear a confirmation from one of you more knowledgeable folks a yeah or nay. Something to do with the higher bitrate at the time of capture?

Recording externally will give you a higher bit rate and 422 vs 420 colour sampling. Whether or not this is a great advantage will depend on your application.

Thanks for this. I have another question as well -- not being totally familiar with the Star. I'm assuming that one can use the Star's HDMI out to hook into a monitor? I have a DP4, which I love and am spoiled by. I wouldn't want to have to rely on the C100's onboard monitor. Secondly, I guess the feed from the C100 would go to the Star first, then out from that? I ask because I'm trying to figure how I'd keep the cables under control. I realize the issue I'm having here would be resolved by a recorder with a monitor, but why toss away the DP4 if it's not necessary. Not for now, at least.

Hyperdeck shuttle2 doesn't do pulldown only ninja2 can do pulldown from hdmi . I was told they were looking in to it.

Yes the feed goes to the recorder first and then to the DP4. I also use a DP4 EVF on my C100. I have the recorder mounted on the back of the rods over the shoulder pad and it works very well. The only thing you need to remember is to make sure the overlays aren't sent over to the external recorder otherwise it's recorded onto your footage. One nice thing about the recorder is that you review your recorded footage without putting your camera in media mode and that saves you time. Other nice thing is that while you review the footage on your DP4, the camera is still showing what's in front of the lens.

Curious what other methods people have used for mounting the Ninja Star (discreetly, cheaply, and without effecting the camera balance too much).

Also, Super Talent CFast cards still holding up?

Yup, the Atomos reader works with the Super Talent cards.

I've been attaching the Ninja Star to the left side of a Wooden Camera top plate, so I can still use the C100 handle. It works okay. Super Talent cards are weird and finicky with the initial formatting, but after that they've worked fine. Not sure how reliable though, time will tell.

Also has anyone figured out how to get around the Ninja Star date/time-stamping every clip the same? It makes it tough to do a Time of Day sync with other cameras in post.

I wish there was a way to fix the time/date stamp. Its the only drawback I have with it really. Sort of a drag that every clip has same date and time, not only for syncing with other cameras, but when i import into FCPX, I like to have my clips sort by date. This negates that from working. Would love to hear of a workaround.

Any photo of your setup ? Thanks !

I typically have mine at the very back of the rig with a magic arm. Trying to keep the weight as low as possible.
