C100: Ninja Star and the C100: Forever together?

How quickly does it detect the 24p cadence in low light and how accurately?

How big is the unit compared with the Ninja 2?

Do you love it? How are you transferring the footage to your computer?

I can't comment on the size difference of the Ninja2 as I've never owned/used one, but I can say that it's very small (about the size of a wallet). It detects 24p very quickly, and if it doesn't you can set it to 24p manually. Footage just get's dropped into a folder. I got it yesterday so it's still a bit early to give a review on it or an opinion but so far it's very positive. :)

Atomos Ninja Star with CFast Reader & $300 64GB CFast Cards Bundle at Texas Media Sys

Atomos Ninja Star with CFast Reader & $300 64GB CFast Cards Bundle at Texas Media Sys

We made our own bundle with the two 64GB CFast Cards for $300. You can add the cards to the cart when ordering below.

The Ninja Star Kit now includes the CFast Reader for $295.

We used a Monoprice cable in the photo.

Very cool, about to order one but is it the Atomos reader? Just want to make sure it supports USB 3.0 before I buy.

Thanks!

I have the Ninja Star myself. I am also using the Super Talent 64 gb cards that are being offered on Amazon. So far the cards have been running pretty well, but I still plan on buying square trade warranties for both of them in case of issues.

I personally have attached the ninja star by using a double male 1/4 screw into the the top hotshoe. The Ninja star is light and when using a battery adapter, I can now use my Canon lpe-6 Batteries. I think I might find a adapter to mount the Ninja Star on the side of the c100 where the audio wire post is.

I've tried attaching the Star to the handle or somewhere on the camera body and I've found that it just adds too much weight at the top of the camera. I already have a EVF and a monitor for the focus puller so keeping as much stuff down low works much better and helps with the balance of the tripod. I've also purchased the LP-E6 battery plate. I didn't want to invest in a sony battery system. I'll keep the sony as a backup if I run out of LP-E6's.

This picture made me realize the Star might be too big for my needs after all. I´m sure Atomos have shaved of everything they could, but for the C100's ergonomics, I think I like the Blade with Cavision mount (as seen in the Ninja Blade thread) better - for hand held doc-style shooting that is. Shooting with tripods and rigs this is fine of course.

I kind of worry about that micro HDMI port. Regular HDMI isn't the most secure port as it is and a friend told me that broken/loose micro HDMI ports is a common service issue at the store that he used to work at. Even if you gaff tape it so that it doesn't fall out under its own cable weight, what's the longevity of the port when used regularly?

Well, it was worth a try, but I'm afraid the DeLock Cfast Adapter definitely does NOT work with the Ninja Star. It took about a month to get here from the UK, but in the end, it's simply too thick.

Apparently, Cfast Type I and Type II are different things than Cfast 1.0 and 2.0 - the DeLock adapter is Type II, which is thicker than Type I, the type that the Ninja Star takes. Sigh.

Anybody want to buy a couple 128gb fast SD cards and some Type II delock cfast adapters?

Even if the adapter works, I doubt that the SD cards can work properly with ProRes HQ, usually those very fast SD cards only have sustained write speed of 10-20MB/s, CF cards can go up to 65MB/s sustained.

How, then, does the Black Magic Pocket Camera handle 1080p prores HQ effortlessly?

Furthermore I'm weirded out by all this sustained disk read stuff in general.

Atomos claims you need 80MB/sec sustained... but prores is 220Mb/sec at most or 28MB/sec.... way less than that. My Super Talent cards are 300MB/sec read, 50MB/sec write and I'm guessing it will work without drop outs. And yet experts on Amazon explain that even with the Atomos card they can only recored Prores LT, which isn't much better than AVCHD!

(That's right. Anything better than prores lt requires an extremely expensive CFAST 2.0 card!!!)

Sooo confused lol.

Actually I think he's just confusing MB/s and Mb/s

It seems he owns the recorder, though, otherwise it would be absurdly presumptuous to comment on it!

Anyway I will let you know my experience with even slower (Super Talent) cards. Hoping for the best, enough so that I'm assuming he's wrong.

I can't comment on the performance of the Star with the cards you are using but I can confirm that with the Atomos cards, it records prores HQ without a problem so far. Trigger works well and it detects 24fps on it's own before the camera even records anything.
