Nikon User Thread

Yeah! After all of the researching that I have been doing I would have to agree with you! If anyone is willing to sell I am up to see the price. Pay Pal user!

I was at a ritz camera today because i was bored in the mall and the saleman was trying to tell me digital cameras don't work unless the lens has auto on it.

heh.

Well, this is almost true. Canon digital bodies aren't compatible with their old manual focus lens mounts, and Nikon digital bodies lose lots of functions such as metering, depending on the body. I've used manual lenses on my digital, but I wouldn't do it in a high-pressure situation where you don't have time to make mistakes.

Took some quick shots at a Keith Urban concert tonight...

50mm (couldn't take zoom lenses in sadly)

Hey just wondering if anyone has used the Nikon 50mm F1.8. I am so torn on purchasing this lens. I would like to see some uncorrected photos that this lens has produced. So if anyone has them please post some pictures up!

And tell me your thoughts about this lens also!

The 50mm 1.8 is a great lens all around that is fast. If you want to see some uncorrected images check out RedUser and look at Evin's lens tests. He goes through the F-stops so you can see how sharp this lens gets at f/4-f/8. At f/1.8 it is a pretty soft lens but what do you want at $99?

I've heard nothing but great things about it but have no personal experience. I'm just a post whore in this thread, sorry. I ordered my D200 finally though so I'm psyched. The 50 1.8 is definitely on my list of toys.

Congrats on getting the D200, I would recommend getting a field guide or something along those lines simply to lower the learning curve especially if you haven't worked with a pro guide in the past. If you go to www.bythom.com he has a great Ebook on the D200 plus a lot of great reviews in general (he's an accomplished writer for BACKPACKER as well as an award winning photogapher).

The 50mm is a great lens but it does have some drawbacks... but once again, for $99 you really can't go wrong (you can't even get a cheap third party knock off that's f/5.6 and higher for $99)

Yeah! After all of the researching that I have been doing I would have to agree with you! If anyone is willing to sell I am up to see the price. Pay Pal user!

The price you pay used for a 50mm f/1.8 is going to be around $70-$80 and for $20 more you can have a new one with a 5 year warranty. Spend the $20.

The D200 can meter with chipped manual lenses. I like using these for certain studio applications and even some macro work but for event photography I very rarely ever use a manual lens.

Probably my favorite lens. Definitely the most bang for your buck, by far.

I agree that there is a lot of bang for the buck with the 50mm but a couple of factors to consider, or as I call them, the downfall of the 50mm:

1. For 2.5 times the money at $250 the F/1.4 is way sharper at 1.4, 1.8, 2.0, 2.8. At around f/4.0 they are pretty close and at f/5.6 they are identical. If you do a lot of low light shooting that extra stop is worth while... BUT... at f/1.4 the focal plane is very shallow.

2. On a 35mm camera 50mm was considered to be the standard focal length, but with Nikon digital cameras it is most certainly not. Because of the 1.5x crop factor the 35mm f/2.0 is the standard focal length whereas the 50mm is almost hitting near telephoto range with an equiv. focal length of 75mm. This is fine for many but it may not be wide enough for some. Personally I dont use a 50mm as my walk around lens because it's not wide enough. For general walk around stuff I actually prefer either a 28mm prime or a 10-20mm zoom (both of which are much more expensive than the 50mm 1.8 which is a great value overall).

3. 50mm 1.8's are often thrown in on camera packages because they are cheap and it gives the seller a chance to include a lens. When buying used these are some of the nastiest most beaten up pieces of glass I have ever seen.

4. Most importantly, I firmly believe that shooting primes will make you a better photographer. I was discussing this with one of my student's last week and I believe that zooms (which I shoot almost exclusively now) are one of the major reasons we have so much crap photography. When you shoot a prime it forces you to move, to change your physical position in order to achieve the look you want, whereas when you shoot a zoom you are able to spin the barrel and change the focal length). Both serve a purpose but I find that if you are wanting to learn to be a better photographer and you are interested in learning as much as possible then it is really best to just get a prime and move your feet and a 50mm is the best way to get there because of price. That being said, the downside is that as you build a collection of glass you will change which lens you are shooting more often and this will lead to more dust in your camera... Then again, I worked with a photographer that shot an entire event with a 50mm 1.4 just to see if he could do it and he had some great images and most likely no dust.

OK, back to the Sunday papers.

This shot was shot with a 50 1.8. The first is the finished product and the second is the raw image with primary CC. And yes Ming, this means more model pics coming up today as well. :)

This is something the moderator panel has discussed in the past. While the human form and nudity are certainly artistic, for the sake of our forum and community we do not allow the posting of these images.

It is clearly stated that porn is not allowed, so the question is then asked, what is the line between pornography and artistic nude photography.

From this point forward, if it is something that you would not be able to view in front of your boss at work then it is something that should not be posted here.

Violation of this rule will result in loss of posting privilege.

I will make a sticky regarding this policy.

Well, all i have to say to that is, its all relative. Where you work, what industry you are in. I work for a Navy contractor, and the Ex-Navy guys that I work with love these pics....even my boss. Just a for-instance.

I would say, if you can't look at it in front of your Gandma....then it shouldn't be up here.

But, in saying that. I have other pictures on here that have a sexual, if not, nude feel to them. Why didn't they get axed as well?

Anyway. Exploration is limited here, very well.

My deviant art site has some updated pics, and before you cancel my account for stating that, you have to log in and verify your age to view nude material.

Good day men and ladies.

Bayne out.
