Nikon to Canon lens adapter

So I took the plunge and got an 5DMK2. Life long Nikon user, and have some decent lenses. What's the adapter people are using to use Nikon lenses on the MK2?

You have a wide range of choices, from cheap, no-name, flea-bay specials from China in the $25-$50 price range, to a little more sophisitcated Chinese import also on flea-bay from happypagehk in the $80 -$95 price range, (his new adapters are reported to be pretty good). to Fotodiox with prices from about $40 - $150 depending upon the grade of adapter, to Camerquest (the ones that I use ... reportedly made by Kindai in Japan) in the $175 price range, to uber-expensive Novolflex adapters from Germany in the $200 - $300 price range. (If you are going to have something like an 80-200 ED hanging off your 5D, it might be a good idea to spend a little more on your adapter.)

If you have a Nikon G lens (like the 14-24 or 24-70) then there is only 1 person that I know of who makes an adapter for the G lenses. It is the 16:9 folks in England. Very expensive and expect at least several months' wait, since they are made by hand in very small quantities.

«I was having the same problem with my EOS 10D and a Takumar 50mm lens. It was annoying because most of the time I was trying to capture my 18 month old son, and getting about one out of twenty photos in focus. Then I got an AF confirm M42/EOS adapter, and hey presto! its up to about a fifty percent success rate for photos of quickly moving targets, and pretty much AOK all of the time for stationary targets.»

I have used both... I bought the $275.00 version from B and H (the German model) which promptly got stuck on a lens... I managed to get it off and returned it immediately.

Ive since purchased 4 of the e-bay specials ($10/each) and they have all performed flawlessly, the advantage being that with that many of them, I do not have to remove them so frequently (really only when I want to put them back on a Nikon body).

That's a great point, because if you have adapters on many or all of your lenses it will be much quicker to change lenses, without extra steps removing the adapter and mounting it on the next lens. Fifty or a hundred lens changes in a day can add up to a lot of fiddling around with small mount rings. (and eventually dropping them in cold weather with frozen fingers)
Which cheap brand worked flawlessly for you?

I bought a photodiox adapter for leica r lenses with focus confirmation $150 and it is built like a tank. I just leave the adapter on the body and change lenses that way. You don't really need focus confimration for video, but it is really great to have for stills (wouldn't shoot stills w/o it).

CINEVATE.

End of story. They have the best canon-nikon adapter around for the best price. Buy it. It's worth it.

IMO, the cheap ebay ones eventually get A LOT of play in them, which is why I switched to the Novoflex ones.

More expensive, but MUCH more solid.

Well...I've had them for about a month.. not a whole lot of heavy usage, because for this price I purchased several that remain attached to the lens without the need to remove and re-attach for each lens change.

I'm normally all about the "get what you pay for" adage... I'm the guy who normally overpays...

That being said, the $250 german B and H version got stuck on my lens the first time out... the cheapie version hasn't been stuck once. Base your opinion on my experience, and then tell me which adapter is worth $250 and which is worth $4.00.

Look.... for $4.00 (US) do us both a favor (as well as anyone else following this thread) and tell me which one YOU think works better, based on how much you spent on your camera, it's a pretty worthy investment in my opinion. Play? after how many lens changes?

Ask how much a (borrowed) $3,000 lens is worth with a $250 adapter attached that WON'T come off without a vice!!! Then we'll discuss play.

Sorry if sound indignant... but in relation to the total cost of your rig, these adapters are PENNIES! Just try them and see if they work for you...

Rocky.. I would try directly contacting the seller and seeing if he has more of these.... I would imagine based on the items in his store he has, or will soon have more, I got four in one deal.

Best of luck !

Won't the adapter slightly throw off your focal length? Has anyone had any focusing problems as a result? I checked out the Cinevate and it looks too good to be true. Thanks

I have the Cinevate, works well on my Nikon AI glass, although it never really clicks into place. Also I discovered it is not compatible with my non (pre) ai glass. So I have to use a Fotodiox adapter for that.

I was just about to put my order in until I saw this reply,.... are you saying that there are different nikon to canon adapter rings for different functions? I'm all okay having to function everything manually but how do I know if the one I'm getting will operate on the 5D?
Cheers

Does the Photodiox click into place better than the Cinevate?

They are both in the same price range, which one do you think is a better mount?

I have other lenses besides Nikon, but Cinevate only seems to make a Nikon mount, true?

I also heard you must power down the 5D before removing a lens. Can you just remove the lens and leave the adapter on the camera or is it better to remove both from the camera first and switch the adapter to the next lens before mounting back one the 5D body?
