Nikon Hacker making progress - Higher bitrate for D7000 D5100 D3100 and D800

Has anyone used flaat 12 with something like an Atomos Ninja? I've been shooting with a BMCC lately and haven't needed to hack my D800, but lately I've been looking at buying a 2nd body and if I can just buy a recorder and shoot flaat 12 to ProRes that would save me a bit of coin.

If I remember right flaat 12 doesn't look too bad with the default h264 if you denoise a bit and I'm wondering if Prores will clean that up any.

What's the highest mbps rate in a D800 without loosing the playback in the internal monitor?

I really need it, not for me, but to show/discuss things.

Just as I was about to sell off my D7000, I stumble across this thread...

Has anyone tried the higher bitrate Beta on a D7000?

If it works I will keep the camera. But the words "beta" and "bricked" give me some pause. I'm curious whether there are any other intrepid guinea pigs here who've tried it.

Bricks can occur with any firmware update when the power is interrupted, this is true for the official firmware too, just bad design from the camera manufactures.
they should always have a backup firmware in the camera that cannot be deleted, this way you will never have a brick because of firmware updates.

Apparently one poor guy on Nikon Hackers bricked his D7000. He was using an external battery grip for power during the firmware update. (Note to self: don't do that.)

If I install the beta firmware on my camera, I'll report back here with an update.

Always update firmware with 1 (one) fully charged original Nikon battery - No grip. I updated my d800 that way and so far, I have not encountered problems. Even doing back to back updates (hack->original).

Does someone know the real resolution of the 5100/7000 video? Is it just me eyes or the footage from my 5100 is lack of detail?

I've just spent the last three hours test the 36mbite upgrade on the D7000. The 7000 is my third camera body so I decided I could take the risk. Well at 24fps 1080P it is now as good or better than the D7100. I was using the Nikkor 12-24 set at 18mm to test the two cameras. I test the 7000 with the standard codec and the NikonHacker codec against the D7100 (no hack available) at 24 1080P. The standard D7000 codec reports about 3.75 for the video data rate while the Hacker reports 9.375. It is significantly sharper when compared side to side in a video. I would not recommend doing this unless you can spare your 7000 as with any upgrade if your battery dies you will brick your camera. That being said I have done at least 8 upgrades/restores while testing with no issue. The files with the hack are larger (depends on the detail in the scene) and your recording time drops from 20 minutes to 17 minutes. But IMHO the increase in sharpness (detail) is worth it. It is now actually slightly better than the D7100 24 1080P in detail.

An interesting side is that Movie Studio 64 bit version 13 newest update, reports the video data rate for the D7100 24 fps 1080p @ 9.375 mbytes as it does for the 7000 with the NikonHacker, the standard D7000 codec reports 3.75. I have done the install to hacker and standard about 8 times with no issues.

The one issue I did note is that the higher bit rate files stop playing in playback unless I hit the arrow to engage 2x fast forward, which still allows for checking your content.
