Nikon D90 -> Canon 7D thread

and by next summer who knows what might be out. We could have a 8D or a D400s!!
i'm not sure. i want to but i won't be doing any serious filmmaking until next year, maybe even next summer, so i'll wait and see. right now i'm too busy finishing my feature, going to med school, and having a baby. i like keeping busy but everyone has a limit. :-)

I'm moving over back to Canon from Nikon. The D300s....I expected better. In the long run I feel more secure with Canon as far as video goes. That's saying a lot, because I've been a loyal Nikonian for over a decade. I could wait around for Nikon to step up in the game but that doesn't look like it's going to happen over night. I've got work to do between now and then!

Just looked at the Nikon Rumors leaked road map. Yes by October the whole D90 or 7D might not matter.
"Movie – mode: 1920 * 1080 at 24 fps Quicktime MOV, H.264 codec" On a full frame camera. But Nikon will have to keep the price under $3,000. Might be a good reason to wait and if Nikon was issmart they would make this anouncement before the 7D comes out.

Filmmakers like us are just a fraction of their customerbase and the only consumerfriendly slr-like camera is the GH1 imho.
When I peek at photoforums many see the moviefunction as something they can do without and that a dedicated camcorder is much more versatile.

But Nikon has something up it's sleeve in the middle of October.

One of the drawbacks so far in all CMOS cameras is rolling shutter and this is much less in 720p50fps mode. So this need to be in a new Nikon as well as 1080p.

Zim,this rumored roadmap is old news, and fake. The only stuff on that so-called roadmap that was correct were things allready known and confired. The rest is bs. Like the full hd h246 capabilities. It promised the same for the D300s

As for me, I'm gonna wait 'till I'm dead for the right movie dslr. I want Panavision 35mm control with a virtual professional crew, automated real time in camera editing, an automated scriptwriter function, an automated personal experience and inspiration mode, and a standard deviation corrected probability algorithm that will predict my chance of getting a break, my box office success, or the success of the union I'm filming if I do weddings. I'm also waiting for fully manual control over the electrical current traveling from the battery or AC adapter to the camera. Until that happens, Canon and Nikon can stick it. If they think I'm going to waste my time learning about lighting, composition, the fundamentals of narrative film making, or the originary thing that might move me to want to join sound and image to capture my interpretation of life and the world, they've fooling themselves.

And to think Nikon only shoots 720p. My life experience and the things that move me only start to kick in at a full 2K scan. Don't they know that?

Sorry about that.

I feel the same actually. What a camera alone can do is completely overrated. If one can't do without whatever future camera, one shouldn't be making films, period. However, it is a real pain to work with a D90 and this fact is justification enough for me to make a switch whenever there's something out that makes cinematography a bit easier...

some people aren't making films now, but will in the "future", which is a great reason to wait for a future camera. i feel that the opposite is more common, people buy cameras and don't really use them. waiting until you need something is a good idea. none of my films ever originated from owning a camera. i always rented them, or as with the d90 bought them just before the production started.

I totally agree. BUT with the D90 I changed! I went out filming because I wanted to test the camera. So I suddenly hade a reason to get out and shooting short videos just for that resend. And even if it’s not any masterpieces I really enjoy it! Its almost like shooting with a super8 camera. Point and shot like stills but video. And I that is so god for the personal development, I think. I mean I take stills to pay my rent and I take stills because I love it and want to document my life. But to be able to do the same thing with film/video is new to me ( In a good looking way) :)

Ack - finally responding to a Nikon thread.... but, been shooting Nikon for ages (anyone need one of those fiber-optic Forscher Polaroid backs? Got one! On an 8008 body!) But I digress..

Nikon SLRs make gorgeous stills. So do Canons. A good shooter can get pro results with a Rebel or a (yikes!) D100. (I've shot magazine ads with the lowly D100).

I've seen luscious, gorgeous D90 video - at least at SD resolution (And some at HD). I've seen crap jello-cam D90 footage, too. "the D90 sucks" - "The D90 is a revolution" - "Wait for the firmware update" (and wait and wait and wait).

Yeah, I'm buying one soon, got a boatload of Nikon glass and never got around to getting an adapter for my DVX. I do mostly web-delivered video anyway, thing could pay for itself in a couple days. I can make some real pretty footage with it.

Will Nikon give us the firmware to make the thing an almost-Red (a Pink?). I'm doubting it for some reason, but who knows. Life's usually not that perfect. People are making really gorgeous video with all flavors of Nikon and Canon SLRs. The bodies seem to hold about 60% of their value if you resell when the next-thing comes out (hint: save your boxes and manuals, try not to bang it all up). Buy something, anything, and learn its ins and outs, become a "partner" with it and push it as much as you can. Make some $$ with it and/or LEARN with it - either way, it's money well spent. Upgrade as life allows. Rinse and repeat.

There's no perfect solution (though for me, a Scarlet with a Nikon mount sure sounds close...)

Sorry, just been reading way too many D90 posts!

Good points

Exactly.

Exactly, exactly, exactly.

I have been using the d90 for B-Roll cutaways of nature with Lensbaby's Muse & Composer, as well as macro lenses, and even some regular 28 and 50mm on a documentary. The footage looks excellent, and will be used for much of the film.

If you have an approach that takes advantage of the D90's strengths, it can certainly make you money.

I was so excited when I got the D90 a year ago. The first films I did had that wonderful feeling of beauty. But then I stumbled onto all the shortcomings and today I'm selling my beloved D90.

I have to live with the GH1 alone for a while until the 7D pops up at my dealer but I'm keeping my Nikon glass for future Nikon body.

maybe wait till the 7D comes out. There will probably be shortcomings with it too.
