Nikon D90 -> Canon 7D thread

Hi guys!

Long time no see. Let's make this a thread for Nikon D90 users who are thinking about switching to a Canon 7D.

1) What are the significant pros and cons compared to the D90 (besides having manual control, Full HD and less jello)?

2) What should I know about being able to use my Nikon prime lenses with the 7D?

Any other inputs are welcome too. :)

Ya this thread is a nice idea, considering I'd like to trade my D90 for a 7D, plus there really hasn't been much traffic in the Nikon D90 section of dvxuser.

Regarding Nikon lenses on Canon, afaik there are no adapters that allow for communication between Nikon glass and Canon camera bodies. Anyone have suggestions for an adapter?

I have a D90 and it is great for photos, not that good for video. The 7D looks great, especially for sports. For me it would be to much of an investment to switch to Canon from Nikon. I don't know what Nikon lenses you already have. Also not familiar with any converter to allow Nikon lenses to be used on a Canon body.

For someone starting out I would suggest looking at the 7D over the D90 or even D300s.

You can get Nikon to Canon adapters on ebay. They work quite well from what I've seen, but you're limited to using your manual lenses because they're dumb adapters. You won't be able to use your Nikon DX lenses on Canon and control aperture.

I will probably go with the D300s. The main reason is for photography. I could wait till a D400 comes out but I'll see.
I'm kind of leaning towards the Barry Green view. Just get a video camera with XLR jacks etc. All of the VDSLRs have limits. I can see using it for somethings. The D300s so far as produced some nice looking video. So has the 7D even if I think it looks more like video and not that 24p film look we all want to get out of video.

For now my DVX100b will work fine. If I get the D300s I'll probably give the HD video a shot for somethings. The Canon 7D isn't going to get me to switch brands and
the Nikon D300s is going to blow away the 7D on the photography side.

the Nikon D300s is going to blow away the 7D on the photography side.

Really? why so?

If that is the case doesnt that mean the d90 also would better the 7d in photography since both the d90 and d300s have pretty much equal iq.

The D300s has been upgraded on the photography side more than they did they video side. Just look up at Nikon USA on the changes.

Some of it will all boil down to if you like Nikon or Canon. I've been using Nikon for 25 years.

Zim, I don't know from where you got the idea that this thread is about photography, the D300s and 'regular' video cameras. I would appreciate it, if you could stay on topic. Thanks.

huh what ?

I think you need to rescan the facts, and hey, if you think the 300s will be a far better stills camera then the 7D, your being mislead somewhere's. The possible D400 and above yes for sure could and would be better then the 7D but no way the D300s is. Either way its very close with these cameras and stills... and for a similar price or even less, your gonna get far superior video on the 7D. Adapters work great so you can use your Nikons on the 7D. I have a 5D and use a bunch of Nikon's and Zeiss's with nikon mounts on it that originally I used on various Nikon's, one of which was a D90. The 7D seems like a perfect choice for people upgrading from the D90. Heck I am going to get one to go with my 5D.

I want Nikon to come out with something smokin just as badly as you do but it just doesn't make sense at this time to not be brand agnostic... Its just not smart to stick your head in the sand and pretend like there aren't better options out there.:)

btw... I have a few cheap adapters ranging from $20-60 off ebay and they all work, some with issues like loose, incorrect infinity and collimation off. Finally I dropped the cash for a Novoflex which was pricey, but it is flawless.
You basically get what you pay for and some cheap ones work rather well and others, issues.

Hey we are talking about camera's that there main reason is photography. "You would appreciate it" dude these threads go all over the place!!!

People want to take a camera that is made mostly for pictures and turn it into nothing but a video camera! My point is I'll buy a Nikon and put my 2.8 lenses on it and be happy with the results. Others will get a Canon and do the same.
Neither the D300s or the 7D should be your first choice for filmmaking. If you want to use one fine by me. I'll probably use the video side some too. But I will grab the DVX100b most of the time. I will later upgrade it and get a good HD video camera.
Androwski I got the idea that this thread is about photography because the thread is about DSLR cameras!!!!

Both will be great Brad....

I don't understand why you keep saying that. Have you done any "filmmaking" with either the D300s or the 7D? I've been reading about many "filmmakers" who have gone to the GH1 or 5DMII as their primary cameras and are very happy they did.

Barry Green had a good post yesterday about using these cameras,,,He made some good points.
I would try but if I had something really important or good to make I would rather use something better than either one of these cameras. Some of Barry's points, no XLR jacks, no way to monitor audio etc.

I think we will see some good stuff both cameras but I'm getting a DSLR for photography first. Video second. One of these days I'll upgrade my DVX100b with a good HD video camera.

I'm sure some are happy. No I haven't used either camera yet. The 7D is not out and I've been trying to get my hands on a D300s around here before I buy one. But they can't get them here yet. If I get the D300s I will try and make a film with it. But if someone said here is $100,000 to make a film I would use something else. Unless they wanted me to use a VDSLR!!

@shphotovideo: I have old manual AI-S lenses.

@BradM: Thanks for your input!

@Zim: First I wanted to comment some of your posts, but I think it's pointless. Half of the posts are yours and they don't contain one pinch of useful information. Keep on repeating yourself and spamming this thread...

spamming,,,,no I don't think so. You just don't listen and I have to say the same thing over to you.

Here how about this,,,,"get the Canon and sell all your other cameras" Do you like that?

if someone said here is $100,000 to make a film I would use something else.
for what it's worth that's half the budget of my d90 feature. and i can assure you it's not a lot. once you have money you need to start spending it, and then you realize how expensive everything is. cameras are cheap to rent so you're mistaken if you think the budget determines which camera you use per se. people cost money and time costs money. if you're able to shoot your film quicker and with less people because of a certain camera, that's way more importand. other things like stealth factor and the need for steadicam work or vehicle mounting can also make an slr a better choice than let's say the red one.

you're not a professional filmmaker, are you? i think you should realize that a lot of us on this board are. you like to talk about things you've no idea about, that's fine and i love it too, but don't expect others to do the same. some people actually know their shti.
