Nikon D90 -> Canon 7D thread

I got the idea that this thread is about photography because the thread is about DSLR cameras!!!!
yeah but this entire board is about video cameras, and if you haven't noticed that most people are here because of video and discuss that pretty much exclusively you probably haven't been paying much attention. ;-)

well Matt no I don't make a living doing it but I do it on the side.
But I would get the camera that does the best job for what I'm doing and if someone was putting the money up and would talk to them about what could be used. Quick is not always the best.

You had $50,000 for a movie and use a D90? Really? Why? Why not rent a HVX or something? Are you sure you are a pro?

I joined this board 4 years before you did and one good thing about it is there are pros, semi pros and everyone else. I don't mind being in the everything else group. I've made some money but I really like doing what I have been doing because I enjoy it. Nothing worse than a smug "I'm a filmmaker" poster!!
Matt climb down off your high horse and remember we are not all great movie makers like you!!

Also when we are talking about DSLR cameras that covers video and photography. I'm not the only person who has said that either but maybe you were not paying attention either!!

1) What are the significant pros and cons compared to the D90 (besides having manual control, Full HD and less jello)?

Let me stop you right there...
That's like asking why is a Volvo better than a '77 Pinto... other than not blowing up in a flaming pile of car parts!

Never mind, I'm going to look up the information I need myself. I'm not a tech-geek, I'm a visionary filmmaker who was looking for some laid-back opinions. This highty-tighty talk doesn't interest me much...

Man I feel bad for Androwski. Out of 26 replies to his thread, only about 4 or 5 actually address his question.

Here are some quick notes regarding your question 1:

The 7D pros :

In terms of video:
- Can shoot both 1080 and 720 and in more frames rates. D90 only does 720 at 24P.
- Has external mic input. D90 has none.
- Has manual control. D90 does not.
- Codec bitrate is higher
- Arguably less jello but will need more testing
- Has dedicated button for Live View and video record start/stop

In terms of stills:
- Shoots faster at 8fps vs. D90's 4.5 fps
- 1.0x - 100% viewfinder vs. D90's 0.94x - 96%
- Environmental sealing equal to EOS-1n
- 18 pt all cross type AF

7D cons:

- None in terms of video that I can see as compared to the D90
- A little bit heavier than the D90
- More expensive
- Will need to buy into the Canon system of lenses and flashes if you want to use it for stills (only a con if you already own a lot of equipment from another system).

Hope that helps!

Maybe the thread would be better if it was D90 users who might switch to the 7D or upgrade to the D300s. That could be a choice too right?

Hi guys!

Long time no see. Let's make this a thread for Nikon D90 users who are thinking about switching to a Canon 7D.

1) What are the significant pros and cons compared to the D90 (besides having manual control, Full HD and less jello)?

2) What should I know about being able to use my Nikon prime lenses with the 7D?

Any other inputs are welcome too. :)

@Tim: Thanks for your effort!

If done right I liked the look of the D90 and D300s video .

I like the look of the D90 as well, but the "Perya" footage really convinced me to at least take the 7D into consideration. Without manual control and 24p I wouldn't even have given it a thought though.

I don't think the D300s is an interesting choice for filmmakers. You pay the price of a 7D and get a D90 with some minor upgrades. Not really worth it.

What it comes down to for me is the fact that I own a lot of Nikon AIS and AF-D lenses - basically Nikon lenses with an aperture collar that can work with an adapter on Canons.
If my lenses were all AF-S with no manual iris control - forget about it I would not switch to the 7D. I would not bother selling a bunch of expensive Nikon glass that I know and trust for evern more expensive Canon glass and taking a big hit financially in the reselling and buying new. The 7D is nice, and I intend to buy one, but I probably will use it on just one or two shorts before something better came along.

I think a lot of people will be in the same boat - within a year there will be many better options so you have to weigh how bad you need it for the short term vs the long term. Is it worth the hassle changing over to a whole new system? Depends on what you have invested.

a D400 or even a D700x could be right around the corner too!!!

As long as Nikon is on hold from giving us 1080p and a better codec Canon or Panasonic is superior for video. I will try to get hold of a 7D if possible.

what are you a moderator?
Yup. I'm in that boat too.

I heard that one before.

Again, please stay on topic. There are more than enough rumour and future technology threads around. I don't care for these things.
