Nikon D5

There are plenty of photographers who want to buy the latest camera if it can provide a slightly better functionality. In between firing burst of shots, people can record a minute or two of video and they won't crib about the 3 minute limit. For wildlife I don't record for hours together. Based on the subject behaviour I know when to start recording and typically the shots are short unless two leopards or elephants are fighting or a kid suckling from mother. Whereas, for interviews 3 mins limit is often a bad idea.

As far as ergonomics is concerned, people who are used to shoulder mount will naturally be uncomfortable with the DSLR type design. I always prefer the camera on a tripod or a gimbal type rig but not on shoulder. With more and more people moving from photography to videos, the number of people comfortable with DSLR type design for videos is going to increase. With the availability of 3 axis gimbals, the newer cameras will be designed with those in mind. DSLR design is better for the gimbals than a long camera designed for shoulder mount.

I am eagerly waiting for a 1DX II.
Photographers also have 5mp at 24frames. I wonder how nany frames it goes for at that rate.

So, now there's a rumor that D5 will have a firmware upgrade that will up its 4K recording time limit from 3 to 30 minutes.

Or maybe it'll be half-hack, half-firmware. Hackware.

Movie - frame size (pixels) and frame rate 3840 x 2160 (4K UHD): 30p (progressive), 25p, 24p; 1920 x 1080: 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p, 24p; 1920 x 1080 crop: 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p, 24p; 1280 x 720: 60p, 50p; Actual frame rates for 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p, and 24p are 59.94, 50, 29.97, 25, and 23.976 fps respectively; high quality available at all frame sizes, normal quality available at all sizes except 3840 x 2160

Nikon Rumors are adding that the 30 min "limit" will be achieved by using ten consecutive 3-min files ... which, to me, screams, "Hey, we agreed to the 3-min limit and, technically, we're in the clear. You want to sue us? Go ahead. Our army of attorneys is as good as yours".

I thought this had more to do with heat generation? The leaked document I read indicated that the D500 records 30 minutes in normal temperatures and may record less under high heat environments. The D5 may have suffered from even more heat issues since its a larger sensor trying to pump out 4k video frames 30 times a second. Maybe Nikon figured out a way to keep the recording going without melting the D5. One of the major reasons why FF and APSC has been slower to move to 4k video has been heat and processing speed. m43 always had a 4k advantage here because the sensors are smaller and don't generate as much heat. Heck up until recently many APSC and FF DSLRS even struggled with HD in terms of heat. It shouldn't come as a shock that pumping out 4k would have even more of a heat issue.

My understanding is that even the D500 also records in 3 minute chunks for whatever reason. Tony Northrup has a video online where he mentions this. This may indicate the datarate used to record the 4k video and keep the video as 2GB chunks.

They're using a center crop for 4K. The pixels themselves are larger than on an MFT or a 1/2.3" sensor, as a comparison, but I doubt that makes much difference in the heat accumulation.

There was a Nikon at Hunt's Photo & Video in Massachusetts and I decided to attend. I didn't bother to get any shots of the presentation but I did get some quick shots of the cameras . They were fully functional but we weren't allowed to put a memory card in them to prevent people from putting it online since these aren't production units.
