Nikon D3100 D-SLR

the gh1 is very nice but the pictures it takes looks like a regular video camera just with more shallow dof, the low end canons are the same to a degree. if you want the dslr cinematic look you need the higher end canons or a nikon. yes nikon still have problems with their video function but i'm trying to not forget why i wanted this kind of camera in the first place. i already have an old hv20 which takes more amazing hd video than either or the dslr's, if that's what i want.

Couldn't agree more

I just picked one up today to mess around with. It's a good entry-level pixel shooter.

The video function... much left to be desired.
- auto ISO only... not sure what Nikon was thinking here. Makes the video function useless indoors/situations with shadows and varying light... which is pretty much everywhere you'd use it?!
- jello and skew is still very much apparent
- auto-focusing during video is OK
- artifacts big time in low light situations... compression is very apparent

IMHO it's a cool little camera to mess with but I will probably be putting this on eBay soon. I highly doubt the D7000 is limited to auto-ISO only - I don't think the Nikon promo vid shot by Mr Jarvis would have been possible on an auto-ISO setting.

I guess I will have to continue anxiously awaiting the RED Scarlet.

The Af100 is almost here; Scarlet's still a "wonder when" scenario. Check the specs on the Panny, I'm getting very interested - especially since it was initially discussed as a "$10k" camera but the basic body setup is under $5k.

Waiting for some real-world testing & footage on that one.
