nikon adapter quality - are some better than others?

you have to attach them to the lens first then the body, you can't detach them from the lens while attached to the body.

Get one for each lens and don'f forget to buy new canon rear caps, too. Be advised, however if you are about to try to put together a package of MF Nikkor primes for the 7D you need to know that no one has checked the rear element clearance issues yet.

I have a set of MF Nikkor primes I am using with a 5D k2, and while I like them I can tell you that several of the wider lenses had issues with flanges that I had to mill down in order to clear not the mirror, but the housing close to the mirror which was too close to fit. Be careful. Of course, with the 7D these wider Nikkors are less useful anyway. The 35mm f2.8 I have clears the obstruction without modification, but the 28mm, 24mm and 20mm Nikkors all had issues, again with the 5D mk2. With the crop sensor, maybe you need to consider going ahead and buying EF-S lenses for the wider ranges anyway...

If I were you I would start researching retrofocus Nikkors and also considering at what focal length it begins to make sense switching to Ef-S lenses... The older Nikkor 20mm, for instance, on the D5 Mk2 wasn't much fun to pan with - the flaws of the rectilinear design - barrel distortion, mostly - are pretty obvious in a moving shot where they can often be hidden in a still frame or static shot.

Regarding mirror clearance issues, since the 7D is a "crop" camera, the mirror will be smaller than in the 5D2. The chance of the mirror catching something is much smaller.

Question:
I don't own a 5DM2 but wouldn't the mirror be continuously up when in video mode?
Can't you just attach the lens once the mirror is up?

The 5D2 will drop out of Live View mode after X minutes of inactivity to save the sensor and battery. I guess the 7D does the same. Plus, I'm sure at least *some* us *might* actually snap pictures with this thing. :-)

But like I said, since the 7D is a crop camera, I'd be *really* surprised if the mirror was to catch something on Nikon lenses.

I sincerely hope you are right as my set is nikon manual primes, and nikon mount tokina 11-16.
My only remaining canon lens that I intend to keep long term is an FD 24/1.4 and that will be sitting
on the shelf (unfortunately) because of the flange distance.

The mirror didn't clip the adapters when I used my Nikon glass on a 5D...there is no chance it will do it on the 7D.

I've used the adapters (not the chip adapter, though) with the 5D and 30D (older 1.6x crop body) with no problems

Hey Taylor, which adapters did you use?

2nd that question @ Taylor

Also people,
I spoke to a Fotodiox rep today about their $18 adapter and he said that after a while they can get a little loose and that their infinity focus point is past the infinity mark. He advised their $75 pro adapter. There you have it ... if you are gonna get a cheap adapter don't bother with the $18 one, just get the $6 ones.

Another thing to know about Fotodiox is that they usually have better selection and prices on their eBay store (as opposed to their website).

I got a cheap Nikon adapter from them and I must have gotten lucky or something... I can't imagine it becoming loose... it's actually almost too tight!

Huh ... that's interesting. Maybe I will get one after all.

My Fotodiox adapter arrived in the mail today. It's the $18 one with no focus confirmation but I'm using manual AIS nikons anyway.

I have no canon DSLR to check with but putting the adapter on my nikons its a snug fit. Seems well made considering its price.

I only ordered one but now that I know the quality of how it is built I will order two more. Three being a minimum I think for any shoot.
I can see how it would be more practical to leave it on the lens (very unlike the micro 4/3rds adapter that I have become used to).

Leaving it on the lens means ordering canon rear lens caps too.

EDIT:
special thanks to xbourque for the fotodiox recommendation

Sweet. I'm glad you like your adapter.

I actually just received a box full of stuff from them last week. A few lens adapters, Cokin-clone lens caps, Canon rear lens caps, filters, step-up rings, etc... Everything works as advertised.

For anyone outside the USA:
If you order more than 1 item from them on e-bay, do "Buy it now" and then "Commit to buy" BUT DON'T PAY RIGHT AWAY.

Keep on shopping and commiting to buy your other items.

Wait until they send you a combined invoice before paying. That way, the shipping is cheaper. For Canada the rate is 4$ for the first item and 1$ per extra item... if you pay right away, you pay 4$ per item... which can add up really quickly when ordering small items like step-up rings and such.

I love Fotodiox. Did you know that you can do "Best Offer" on their eBay items? I've had to pay full list price on only a couple of their items, but each time it was my choice. It's a good way to save a few bucks.

Also got mine in the mail today and so far I agree looks good for the price.
Nice fit and seems like a good build quality. Willprobably order a few more tomorrow.
