Nikon 50mm f1.4 AI

I would point out that the point of a 50/1.4 is not always to shoot at 1.4
When I first switched to DSLR's over a year ago it was the GH1 had just came out.
I bought nikon 50/1.4, nikon 50/1.2, canon 50/1.4, canon 50/1.2 all vintage manual primes
and tested them. Results are here.

Needless to say I sold off three of them and kept the Nikon 50mm f1.4
No optical flaws that I know of, its a highly regarded lens.

I like the lens a lot but I think the video in the review speaks for itself. The lens does have optical flaws but they are only apparent below f2.8. However that's where a lot of people will spend most of their time with the lens.

Edit: It's been pointed out that this is a Nikon-S 50mm, not the AI version, so it lacks the multi-coating. I will adjust the review accordingly, now I would say it's a great lens considering it comes from 1962-1972.

I have acquired a 50mm AI version and a review with video will follow soon.

What series manual Nikon primes would you recommend? There is a little confusion between AI vs non AI.

I've been interested in the 18mm 2.8 and the 20mm 2.8 for a 550D now with 5D added on next year when they release the next version.

The Wikipedia entry for "Nikon F mount" is a great resource.

Of course just like everything on Wikipedia, nothing is gospel, but it is a good starting point for learning about these lenses.

AI vs. Non-AI is a difference regarding lens mount.

AI lenses have a little slot that moves around when you change aperture, moving the tab on a Nikon SLR. Non-AI lenses dont have this slot, and will break that tab if you try to mount it. Thus, except for high end Nikon film bodies, you cannot use Non-AI lenses on a camera that is AI'd.

What does that mean for us? Non-AI lenses are older.

Older lenses = Lesser lens coating. Otherwise, no difference for video between AI and Non AI lenses
