Nikon 24mm 2.8 AIS Lens a bit soft?

I've always heard that wide angle lenses aren't as sharp as telescopic but to me these lens seem a bit too soft. One reason how I can tell is by using the magnifying zoom button on each lens. With my Nikon 50mm 1.4 AIS, I can definitely tell that it's sharper than the 24mm. Is this normal?
 
What condition is the lens in? Might have some fogging inside that's only noticeable on video/photos, fungus.
 
nope, no fungus. Lens is near mint. I'll try and have some screenshots posted up later on today.
