nighttime look

I think the last one has the night effect but i think it is a little flat. Some highlights and shadows might work. I would think shooting inside you could get the night effect much easier with your lighting more than your post settings. I shot a Fire side Halloween story outside mid day and by adjusting shutter speed and f stop was able to day into night. If you look at some of the older films way back in the day you see a real fake night effect with camera settings but with the cameras today you can really a realistic effect. I will see if i can find the footage. We never used it because the story was real bad. but i think the night effect came through.

Here is a little trial run i did, the interior shot was in a wharehouse with no windows and we lit with intent to show shadows. This might help. Let me know. the outside shot was shot at night .

hey Mark Dog. Yeah the actor is me. Like i said i was just doing some improv, it was nothing too technical. As for magic bullet, on one of my layers of video i used basic white diffusion.

thought i'd drop in since you gave up some kind words...i actually watched your clip before i posted (which was last night) and i've done stuff like that and as some have already said. you need to create shadows...wait not being harsh on your clip just my own tip...because most often nothing at night is evenly lit unless the room has tremendous light. even a flood will create hard shadows.

now my honest opinion. that clip looked like the freezer scene (i think that's it) from "Blade" when Blade was in the hospital...ah geez i forget, but that's what popped into my head. the sound was great and if you did your own make-up...good job.

finally and i hope you like this...did you see "Troy" with brad pitt? the final fight at night was done in a studio with a lot of light. they later did the whole "day for night" using the blue and lowering the lightness. i think the worst "day for night" i've seen was "hercules" with lou ferrigno. i respect filmmakers and try not to bash, but when hercules is fighting a bear and you can see the zipper of the costume...i mean, come on, you gotta laugh.

Ok, this is what I would do:

Keep the low contrast
Crush the blacks a bit, maybe pull down the highlights
Desaturate the image
Apply only a VERY subtle blue. Generally we don't see color at night so anything more than a hint looks fake =)
Let us see the results!

exactly, Shaw! We all need to keep in mind that at night, with little light, there is almost no color seen by our eyes.

Not extremely believable for a night shot, but it still looked pretty good. Tweak it a little more and see what you get!
