Nightmare

Apparently GRAF AIR delivered my camera package yesterday! The package consisted of:

One HVX-200
Two 8 gig P2 cards
One Cartoni Gamma Tripod
One Petroff Matte Box and Follow Focus
One Base Plate and batteries
Two Custom Pelicans
And more...

GRAF AIR left the 4 big boxes without a signature and unattended on
THE FRONT PATIO!

Apparently the GRAF delivery person tried to call me (before leaving the packages unattended), but the number he dialed was "disconnected". I’m assuming my telephone number was INCORRECTLY ENTERED into their system? The number they had been off by one digit. At that point the delivery person called GRAF Head-Quarters and got "special clearance" to leave the packages without a signature ON THE FRONT PATIO.

The scary thing is that I don't even have a front patio... and that’s because

:kali: GRAF DELIVERED MY CAMERA TO THE WRONG ADDRESS!:furious3:
:kali: GRAF DELIVERED MY CAMERA TO THE WRONG ADDRESS!:furious3:
:kali: GRAF DELIVERED MY CAMERA TO THE WRONG ADDRESS!:furious3:

Meanwhile, the woman who lives at the "wrongly addressed" house (the one with the patio), being a good Samaritan, attempted to find the "right" address on the package but couldn’t because the address on the packages DOESN’T EVEN EXIST.

So in other words not only did GRAF Air get my address and phone number wrong, but they also managed to deliver the package to an address that didn’t even match the address THAT THEY INCORRECTLY ENTERED IN THE FIRST PLACE.

My Correct address is: 2332 Rose
Address apparently shown on GRAFS label (address doesn't exist) 2337 Rose
Address where Graf apparently delivered it: (front patio) 2337 Valley View Dr.

Where in the hell did “Valley View Drive” come from deliveryman?

Apparently, at this point the lady who mistakenly received my packages ATTEMPTED to call GRAF AIR to let them know that the packages didn't belong to her and that they needed to come pick them up, but she was unable to get through, lost patience and gave up as she had to get along with her own day. I guess she assumed that GRAF would figure out where they had gone wrong, retrace their steps and retrieve the packages on their own. So the lady left the packages exactly where Graf Air left them (ON THE FRONT PATIO). She then left the house to get on with her day.

Now I’m not sure HOW at this point GRAF AIR got my telephone number (the correct one that is) and couldn’t before… but they did and the delivery guy got a hold of me in an attempt to ensure that I had received the packages that he dropped off on the front patio. I guess at this point he still thought that he had delivered the packages to the right address? I can’t fathom how he EVER thought it was the right address… but he did.

NOW THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I ACTUALLY HEAR ANYTHING ABOUT THE SITUATION.

This call of course takes me completely by surprise, as I wasn’t even expecting the package for another 24 hours as it was originally scheduled. I had no reason to believe the delivery had even taken place at all… let alone getting delivered to the wrong address.

So naturally I tell the GRAF delivery guy that there has been a BIG mix up and that he had better get back over to the wrong address and retrieve the package.

So here comes the real winner!

The GRAF delivery guy goes back and finds that all four packages ARE GONE! The 4 boxes containing approx 15 thousand dollars worth of camera gear has vanished.

The lady who lives at the house said she left them exactly where GRAF originally set them down (on the patio) and that she assumed that GRAF came back to pick them up to re-deliver to me.

I spoke to the police and they said that technically there was no crime against me because I NEVER HAD POSSESION OF THE CAMERA so it could NOT have been stolen from me.

The Vendor/Sender is sending me a duplicate package containing all of the same gear…, which is what I would expect.

My question is who is the crime against, who is liable and who pays for this mistake?

I think Graf Air is liable. Their insurance should handle this issue… correct?
My insurance shouldn’t pay for it because I never had possession of it… it wasn’t stolen from my property or me. I don’t even have the serial numbers for any of the equipment.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

PS- I’m sorry I know this is a really long and detail oriented post, but I felt it was necessary to illustrate all of the events that led up to the missing packages. I’m worried about this and STRONGLY feel that I am in no way responsible for this matter and just want to get a little perspective from others.

Don't be! This post is very very interesting, and us fellow dvx/hvx users can def. imagine this nightmare. Your story made my stomach sink, until I heard you were getting replacement shipment. Very nice and responsible of your vendor. Trust me, I bet your vendor will be the ones going after the delivery service. While they take care of you, thier customer, I bet they are going to go after the initial lost merchandice.

I hope it all works out for you. Sounds like it will.

I'm glad I've never heard of Graf Air or plan to use them at anytime in the future. Man! My heart goes out to you. You make a big investment in your future and see it disappear due to negligence and, dare I say, stupidity. Like =Prodigy= I'm glad to see your vendor step up to the plate to fill your order again. Good luck!

I agree, I am very glad to hear you're having a replacement package shipped, the more and more I read the post the more I thought you had been completely screwed, hats off to your vendor for getting the situation straightened out.

That's a nigthmare, sorry about that. But can you imagine the robber's reaction when he saw what was in the boxes?

"Holy crap, Jackpot!!!!"

Sorry, couldn't resist.:Drogar-Evil(DBG):

I would like to know who the retailer was to make sure I avoid doing business with them. Why did they pick "Graf Air".

The only shipper I reasonably trust is FedEX. UPS is a distant second. DHL, don't even get me started! Given the options, why would someone ship with this unkown anyways? Cheaper?

I second Sproketz: I've seen personally the way UPS warehouse storage employees treat "fragile" packages...and trust me you dont want to know.

The vendor should have serial numbers of what was in the first package.
I assume that the first shipment was marked "DO NOT LEAVE WITHOUT VERIFIED SIGNATURE".
It probably was not. I shipped a hard drive via UPS last week to Canada.
It never made it. The customer was hard to get a hold of. I called UPS and gave them specific instructions and they still could not get it there. Then they wanted another $15.00 to route to a UPS store so the client could pick it up. I told them to forget it and ship it back to me and I was not paying for it. Still have not seen it. And they don't give a s**t. 3 years ago I bought a Sony DSR 1500 from B&H.
Looked at the tracking and they swore it was delivered. I walked over to the next street and found it sitting on the porch of another house with the same 4800 address. I rang the bell so they would not think I was ripping something off.
They were not there. I took the package and hoped no one saw me.
But it just goes to show..........

I had a similar situation, however it was MY porch the computer was stolen off of. It was a $2000 laptop. I had no waiver on file and it was mistakenly left. I got another one free and they eventually caught the perp. In these cases, they almost always catch the guy. High end rare electronics generally can be traced pretty easy. Unless they sell to a private buyer who never sends in the warranty card, they will be caught. Either way, since you did not receive the goods, the seller did not complete the sale and you are free and clear from anything but your cooperation as necessary.

DHL handled 4 DVDs that were sent from the midwest. DHL has previously delivered to our place a dozen times.

The day after they should have been delivered, I checked the status and learned that delivery was attempted and no one was home.

I was.

Then DHL returned the DVDs to the shipper because "no such person existed."

I called DHL and said that the shipping information had my telephone number and no one telephoned.

DHL told me it was "my problem," not theirs.

A supervisor was requested.

12 telephone calls later I learned:

1. That DHL had returned the package to the shipper

2. That DHL incorrected placed the wrong zip code for the shipper

3. The package was returned to my state because of the error.

4. It was delivered to me 10 days later. I requested a refund of the overnight shipping charges.

5. DHL told me because I didn't pay for the shipping, I wasn't entitled to a refund.

I feel your pain

DHL is a terrible company. Its owned by a super rich German guy, and he wants ot corner the market in package delivery by charging much less than the competition. but by charging less he hires less people to do more work. Theri employees are over worked and very underpaid. DHL bad : UPS Less bad. ( my ex girlfrinds dad was a UPS driver so he knew insider stuff)

Hey guys, just want to ask a question, somewhat related:

I can not seem to find a serial number on my HVX. I had another HVX in the past (had to return it) and I couldn't find the serial number on that one either. Am I not looking hard enough? I have turned my baby around and around and I cant find the serial number. On my old prosumer panasonic it was on the underside the camera body, clear as day.

I know what the serial number is, (from the box and shipping invoice), but I would like to locate it on the actual unit.

Anyone have an idea?

I've always had good experiences with Fed Ex.
UPS is OK but has been less reliable than Fed Ex for me.
Its worth the extra dough.

FedEx.

Just when you thought it was save to go in the water.

The last six packages I sent where 10% higher than I was told at the counter for FedEx.

When I asked why, FedEx told me that those quoted rates "were only estimates."

Great, that's like going into a grocery store, picking up a loaf of bread and being told that the price at the display is only estimated.

What is a further interest is the "actual" charge was ALWAYS HIGHER than the "estimated charge."

never lower.

With any of these carriers, the package is the responsibility of the seller (as long as it is FOB your address) and they have to make good on the shipment. They, then go to the carrier for restitution. It can turn into a nightmare though when no one wants to take responsibility.

Your first step is the one you took, call the seller. In your case they did the right thing. You can bet they'll be contacting their carrier (Graf Air) about this.
