Next Generation Canon DSLR

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone had heard anything about new Canon DSLRs in development? Can't afford one right now - trying to save money and wanted to dream a bit about what the future holds.

Thanks!

nothing on the horizon. Get a t2i and turn your dreams into reality now :) .Sell it when the next thing comes out

No disrespect, but I disagree. Digic V is coming next year and the 5D III should be an indication of where DSLR video is heading for the next few years.

Which is the reason Jambredz said to buy the t2i and make your dreams a reality now. There will always be something better, but at a price point of $699 for the t2i it probably is the least expensive camera that shoots Hd Footage at its quality.

Tend to agree - Canon will likely have something announced before NAB, at least if they stick to past release cycles (as well as rumors from CR). Also, it's pretty clear that Sony and Panny have cameras coming soon that will steal some thunder from Cannon's current line-up, which would also put pressure on them.

The real question is whether or not it's a quantum leap forward, a full step forward, or a baby step. Likely only a step at best, but surely there's something coming down the pipe sooner then later.

That said, I also think you are best served with getting a T2 now - at it's price point, I'd argue it's the best deal on the planet for a HD camera. You'll learn what sure to be the same basic menu set up, lenses, pluses, minuses, etc that the next generation will have. It will also remain an excellent B camera/crash camera.

You'll start to get lenses - which will keep their value - and if they're EF lenses, they'll also fit the MarkIII (or whatever it's called).

Perhaps more importantly, you'll get stick time - which is invaluable.

Digic V is coming next year
Has Canon confirmed the existence of any Digic V?

Has Canon indicated the existence of any 5D Mark III?

As far as I know, there is no official word of any replacement for the 5D or of any new Digic chip.

There might be, there might not be, but it sure does seem like these are only rumors, and the rumor sites get it wrong far more often than they get it right.

True enough, but they are due for an upgrade, and are sure to be losing sales to the AF100 at the very least.

That said, the MarkII's are still selling at full price and still seem to be selling well. Just saw a MarkII commercial yesterday during "Detroit 187" touting it as a cinema movie camera.

100% incorrect, the AF100 and the 5d are two different kind of cameras. First and foremost DSLRs are photography cameras, so what is out right now in the photo side to compete with it? Just like you said the 5d has had that same price for almost 2 years and it's going to stay that way for a very long time. Personally I doubt we will see ANY new dslr camera from Canon for at least 6+ months if not more. Now the Af100 and 5d are really nothing alike so I doubt how anyone can compare the two.

100% wrong huh? Cause no one would ever consider one over the other? Not even as a B-cam? Not film students or film schools? Not producers looking for B cams/crash cams?

The two cams are perhaps more alike then you might think, at least in terms of people wanting HD video images accepted as professional quality. They might have different form factors, but some of the first footage from the AF100 (the race cars) was compared directly to... the Mark II.

I'll settle for being 99% wrong though (I'm married, so I'm used to this sort of thing).

Canon hasn't confirmed the existence of either Digic V or the 5D MkIII. With those products, they never do until it gets announced and their still cameras usually don't get announced until they are within a month or so of shipping.

But if we look at history and use some reasoning, it's clear both are due pretty soon.

Digic I came out in Sept 2002 (S45)
Digic II came out in Aug 2004 (EOS 20D)
Digic III came out in Sept 2006 (G7)
Digic IV came out in Aug 2008 (EOS 50D and 5D MkII)

So it seems Digic V is actually late! Maybe they've delayed it to add more features :)

But seriously, a new chip is inevitable because they use it across their entire product line. They make something like 20 million of these chips. They especially need to improve HD video in their compact digital cameras because the competition is moving fast in that market.

With that said, I actually don't expect much from 2nd generation Canon EOS video. Canon is very methodical, cautious and strict with their development schedules so even if the 5D MkIII arrives next August, development of it would have taken place last year or early this year and the technology would not have been there yet at that time (IMO).

Our best hope is a camera from the video division, but that group is notorious slow and I have a feeling if they do anything, they won't release a camera until they have a dedicated servo zoom lens in place at launch. Howver, they do already have a 50 Mbps/4:2:2 codec in place so that's a start.

Nothing is confirmed, of course, but some things do seem inevitable. I don't think we would know definitively if Canon has something in development. They're not like RED who announce a product 3 years before they release it! (Just kidding) My impression (guesses) is that the next generation of HDSLRs will have some enhanced video features. Digic V, if it exists, should hopefully help with that. I faintly recall reading that the 60D will be the last Digic IV camera, but I may be mistaken. Nothing is for certain so far, but we can have our fun predicting the future based on Canon's past. Of course, they could just pull a fast one on us and completely take off the video feature on the next camera :D

I'd expect the 5Dmk3 to arrive in 2011Q2 or 2011Q3; and I hope it will bring digic V, but it could be dual digic IV too

which, by my definition of horizon, means "nothing on the horizon so far, get a t2i/60D and start shooting, then sell it if the next thing is truly much better", aka "see first reply by jambredz"

and I don't think they could "completely take off the video feature on the next camera", but I can certainly see them using all their development efforts to get some kind of autofocus, and moving to a "better" codec, with "better" coming from the soccer mom dictionary, meaning 18 Mbps AVCHD, which, hey, allows you to record more video on your card!! I really, really, hope they don't follow that path, but fear it's a real possibility

So doing one test against an AF100 means they are related? They could have done that test with any camera, in my opinion it doesn't mean they are related. The only possible thing I can even think that is comparable is that the Af100 and 5d both shoot video and have a large sensor ( 5d is larger though ). Other than that there really is none. The Af100 first and foremost cost almost twice as much and delivers all kind of features that these dslrs do not. AF100 is a video camera and these are photography cameras with a video mode that provides great looking footage. There is also no doubt that the footage from the Af100 in that comparison looked better than the 5d as it did not suffer from the same problems that dslrs do.

Personally though instead of 1 af100 or two 5ds ( $4500-5000 ) I would buy two 60ds ( $2000) 2-3 amazing lenses ( $1500 ) 2 light led kit ( $450 ) and party the rest.... I don't need an Af100 or a 5d, my clients and people in general that I have worked with are more than happy with footage from a 60d. I could do a lot more damage with two 60d's rigged up than one af100 body only.
