Escape From The Past, Directed by Joe Begos (Formerly Paradox)

Name change, because another member is already using Paradox, and we don't want to step on any toes. And we're Carpenter fans, so now it's

Escape From The Past

Rolling, reviewing...

Interesting opening. Had the borne feel to it. The camera might have been moving a little too much for my liking. Interesting lighting idea come 1:50. Also had the 24 feeling too. With the Garage Band music and the intercut with the timer.

Interesting concept. I liked it. Don't understand how that ending came to be. But cool none-the-less.

I agree with the camera movement. It was fine during the robbery scene but it was bothering me a bit in the beginning.

I liked the concept for this. You had time, you could have explained it a bit more.
Loved the editing during the last few shots especially.

Nice ending.

Where have I seen this before? I was hoping Van Dam would make a cameo. I'm kidding. Well for me it was a little too much super shaky cam in the beginning shots in the car. I did like the side by side shots of the action and timer. I loved the time effects.

SPOILERS

I didn't understand why his head got blown off. Did the timecop shoot him or was it a result of his first test run of time travel and exploding heads was a result? The latter doesn't make sense in the world you set up so I can assume it's the former.

I like it! I have to agree with some of the other comments about the shake, but overall I liked the camera work/angles. The stopwatch splitscreen was cool...and really...who doesn't love a good head explosion? BooYah!! I don't understand WHY his head exploded, but who cares...it did (nice job on that effect too).

Congrats on a job well done.

hey guys- i directed this film.

Thanks for the comments. I agree looking back on the car dialouge I don't regret shooting it handheld but I had the shutter speed cranked a 1/1000 which I think ended up being a little too much.

The reason for the head explosion is that the portal is only open for 5 minutes- thats why he's on a limit. Once the portal closes it creates a paradox.

in the car

"I don't know, how much time are you going to have?"

"5 minutes"

"what happens after five minutes?"

"don't know, trapped... maybe worse."

The original title of the film was "paradox".

There can't be two versions of "josh", but there's a 5 minute window of opportunity, we had more stuff written, but we cut 2 minutes out as it was merely exposition and got in the way of the short. There's nothing we hate more than a short that's too indulgent in itself, and it will lose viewers because of it. I'd rather have a shorter film that induces discussion, and you're absolutely right for having these questions, looking back, I wish that we had done more structurally, but on the tight schedule we were on, our first Visual effects shot, and the fact that usually we just use houses and woods as locations, makes me a little proud that we were able to pull it off.

The questions are well founded, and thanks for even taking the time to view it, constructive criticism is an amazing asset when you're work as run and gun as we do. Please post any comments or questions.

Hey guys,

Good work. I like the intensity here and a lot of the colors. I think you might have a continuity error with the CC in the car but otherwise, nice.

SPOILER ALERT BELOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(sort of)

I think the story needs work. I think you did well with what you have but I was thinking, what makes this different from any other TIMEtravel movie? I was hoping for a twist or something that would pull this together at the end and I'm not sure the payoff is big enough. Your end effect is fun and looked good. But I felt it needed more. Maybe more with the other guy in the car??? Or something relating to why he didn't wnat to go.
I like the use of a bathroom stall. And some of the dialogue was fun. Your actors did an okay job for not being actors.

Anyway, kudos on your first fest. I see many many fest in the future for you guys. Good work and thanks for posting.

YES! The sun was absolutely heinous that day haha, we actually had to keep the other kid out of the sun as he had gotten sun poisoning the other day. It's a miracle we only had one lighting bump. Thanks for watching, you had some really good comments to throw at it, it's appreciated.
