T2i Next Canon T2i Firmware Update???

I'm sorry if this has been discussed already, I just couldn't find a post.

A friend of mine just got a Canon 60D and after playing with it I have to say I'm jealous. I was more thrilled about the Audio controls though. I have a T2i which of course has no audio controls other then to turn it on or off.

So my question is, does anyone know when the next firmware update might be and if so do you think it will include the audio controls in that version???

Now that the 5DmII and 60D have it, I would think it would be natural for them to include them in the next update for the 7D and T2i. I've read that Canon clearly doesn't want people reverse engineering their firmware like "Magic Lantern" is doing and have limited the amount of updates the 7D can do, which has locked it out from further development by Trammell Hudson (Magic Lantern). They expect the same thing to happen to the T2i on the next update as well.

So since they are making the efforts to block people like Trammell and clearly have the feature on two other cameras, wouldn't it be right to assume that the next firmware update for the 7D and T2i would have more audio options??? Or am I just putting to much faith in a big company?

I can tell you this, virtually everyone who has tried to predict what Canon will do has been wrong.

Canon knows that audio controls are a tool they can use to get you to buy another camera body.

I say we don't see native audio controls on a Rebel until T3i or something.

I don't think Canon will bother with firmware audio upgrades to the 7D/T2i, as like miseducation said, it would "keep" people from buying a newer body with basically the same features. I think the reason the 5D Mark II got manual audio, is because it's full-frame, costs $1,000 more than it's competitor (the 7D), and, well, everything. :)

But I may be wrong. :D

Far as the T2 goes, it's unlikely in my view. I own the cam and love it.

The T2 is essentially the son of a Mark II (9 points of auto focusing, slow burst speed) and the 7D (essentially same APS-C sized sensor, similar lenses). The Mark II, 7D, T2i and 60D all send a 640x480 signal to HDMI while recording.

But the T2 has a better view screen (perhaps the best of any DSLR in the world) and is much cheaper then either "father" camera. From their POV, Canon prolly put too many features in the camera. To wit, read this quote from digitalreview regarding the 7D & T2:

"I can't help but wonder if Canon should be praised or criticised. The photographer in me loves the fact that the more budget friendly Canon EOS 550D can deliver so much but the more shrewd marketing badass in me just can't help but snicker as how their 550D is upstaging their Canon EOS 7D, which is supposed to be the top of the range APS-C sized camera in the market. Regardless, it is money for Canon and it's certainly a lot better than the lack of improved models which is the state of affairs for Nikon at the moment. "

So no, sad as I am to say this, I think it's magic lantern or nothing. Perhaps the new GH2 will spurn Canon to add it, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Also you are getting Magic Lantern, come on dude! What do you need Canon to put out firmware for? I'm sitting here with a 7D and there is no hope of ML. ML's AGC defeat is right around the corner

Not saying I don't want Canon to give us new firmware - I just don't think they will. And short of Canon doing just that, that leaves 3rd party firmware or nothing.

And yeah, it does suck about the 7D's anti-hack programing (another reasopn why the T2 is the better bang for the buck vs the 7D.

5D MII has manual audio?

EOS 5D Mark II: Firmware Update v. 2.0.4
"Now, once firmware v. 2.0.4 is installed, video pros and enthusiasts will have the option of manual recording level (audio gain) control, over a 64-step range, selectable right on the camera’s menu."

If what I've read is correct then, yes!
