Next: 4K Recorder 30p/60p 10-12Bits 4:2:2, uncompressed, prores, H265 & PC 1.395-3K€

Yes it does seem a big omission to not have any raw recording capabilities... Most of the most popular cameras produce the best images in raw recorded to an external recorder. Maybe there is a way to support raw over SDI? I guess it's limited by the decklink software capabilities...

I think most people will be turned off to a portable Windows 8 capture computer unless the gui is really well thought out and the software is something really special. One realm where such a device will succeed is in supporting many codecs that are not so easy to implement and license on specialized hardware such as cineform or h265 and many others. It does seem like a big mistake to not have removable media storage and require all offloading to be done from the recorder itself. No one wants to tie up their recorder on set doing media backups!

Can't speak in the name of Mitch or any Convergent Design people, but I know that FS RAW recording required first a license from Sony then close work between the 2 parties so the (lossless) compressed RAW stream could be interpreted and converted to Cinema DNG. A lot a work to make it compatible with FS700 first, then another mountain to move with the FS7 full support.

...

Tony, C-D now have 1TB SSD's so put two and you have 2TB ! :)

Also, Mitch mentioned that the 71min. recording was with 2x 512GB disks (if I understood correctly).

DPX, ProRes 422, ProRes LT, 8/10bit... seems to me like you are not comparing what's comparable. Uncompressed DPX in 12bit is not the same as ProRes 422 (HQ?) 10bit and it should be 100 minutes given your recording time.

Again, I'm not here to criticize the work your team has done on the machine, I just want to point out what doesn't fit right to me given the price point you want to sell this machine at and what one would expect to have for it.

Tony,

With all due respect, your stats are all over the place. It makes it very difficult to understand what your device can do and sometimes even what point you are trying to make. I am not trying to rain on the parade of the Cinemartin Next. I think it is an interesting device and there is a place in the market for it like there is a place for the Odyssey7Q+ and for just about any other well-considered design. So let's not get into a pissing match here. The Odyssey7Q+ can in fact take our 1TB SSDs, and we can accept two of them at once to allow 2TB of continuous recording. And then you can pull out the SSDs and stick in new ones to keep recording. The Cinemartin Next has 1TB of internal memory and then must be offloaded, but it also costs less and can record in certain formats the Odyssey cannot. And the Odyssey can record in formats the Cinemartin Next cannot. They are different machines, fine.

My point in my earlier post was to say that it is unclear to note different recording formats on a device with a set amount of memory without noting how much material one can record before that memory is full. You note that your 1TB memory will hold about 300 minutes of 4K ProRes 422(LT) at 25p. That's a good number to share, although I consider it a bit disingenuous to list it and nothing else as it is the very lowest recording quality you offer, and just because it is 8-bit and the camera you tested is also 8-bit does not mean that a less compressed codec would not improve the captured signal.

When I first started at Convergent Design one of my first orders of business was to create a record time chart for all of the different formats we offered. It is very helpful for working professionals so that they understand how they can expect to use the tool. Depending how the Cinemartin Next allocates space in the memory, the record times should be similar to the Odyssey7Q+ (with 1TB of SSDs mounted) for the formats that we share. You can see our Record Time Chart at the link below, under the Record Times tab. Note that we note 12-bit, 10-bit, 8-bit, 4:4;4, 4:2:2, various frame rates, etc. It's a helpful way to clarify exactly what is the recorder's capabilities.

So I suggest that you provide the record times for all of your available formats. I think it is great that the Cinemartin Next can record 4K uncompressed, but I'm curious as to how many minutes you can capture at 25p on 1TB.

Hello Mitch, thank you for your suggestion, we will make a chart soon.
I dont want to get into a pissing match here, in fact, as you know, we like your recorder, as you know we were working 2 years ago to develop and integrate an CinemaDNG to Prores solution for your customers in our third mejor release of our popular encoder (Cinec, now at v4.0). What say to us, hey cmon guys go to make this fabulous device ?, thats a great history where Convergent Design has its own location, but thats another history one time in the future probably we will talk about.

Again, thanks for you to take place in this thread, Im happy to find that you see on Cinemartin Next an interesting device with market opportunnities.
"It makes it very difficult to understand what your device can do and sometimes even what point you are trying to make" Well, as you may now, we are recently with this project but as you may deduce, a recorder that is based on a computer have too much market opportunitties, we had not just decided which best; recorder, portable station, stream station, etc .. Do you know more ?, please share with us

As you said, Cinemartin Next can record and deliver output files in formats/codecs/resolution/frames that Odissey cannot, and viceversa.
But being the Cinemartin based on a computer does not mean that a dedicated hardware like Odyssey or Shogun maybe best or not, well, for some instances yes, but for some others not.
Cinemartin Next great feature is that comes with similar features as a video recording device as Odissey and Shogun, but with a computer too, with a similar price tag.

Do you -user- want to only record video ? probably Odyssey and Shogun are great devices, lighter, and so on
But if do you want to have a plus, more possibilities, like an all-in-one device, for a little more, I think it is best Cinemartin Next, that adds lot of possibilities for your seassons

Hi,
I am interested in a portable recorder for USB 3.0 machine vision cameras such as the Pt. Grey Research Grasshopper 3. Will your recorder work for this?

Thanks.

Hi Paul,
Next is also a portable computer, with 4 USB 3.0 ports, so, if Pt. Grey Research Grasshopper 3 and USB 3.0 vision cameras records via a USB 3.0 port, then answer is Yes.
In fact this is what i read from some web " these cameras utilize USB 3.0 interfaces for maximum data transfer speeds of up to 5Gbits/s." so yes, you'll be able to record from this cameras.

Hi Paul, the screen is HD, sunreadable and IPS.
Will be available for order or pre-order (Im not sure if pre-order first) just this month (after NAB), delivery around 4 - 5 weeks after order/pre-order, first in first out. There will be some predefined models and "problably" customized builds where users can choose the components and features they like better, including input/outputs, memory, SSD drive and core processor.

Soon I will publish a hands on video review done yesterday/today by Alex

We are proud to announce that NEXT 4K high end model will support 4K60P true uncompressed video record using dual 6G-SDI inputs.
NEXT High end models will be compatible also with last MAC OS.

Hi shooter
NEXT include LIVE and LIVE T apps.
LIVE is a fullscreen preview & video recorder, currently only for true uncompressed.
LIVE T is a background app that inherits partially the engine from Cinec 4.0 to deliver conversions to Prores and H.265
So, NEXT does not include Cinec but include a version like a "basic Cinec". NEXT Customers can get Plin plugin for Premiere and After effects at a lower price. Cinec will be added soon too.

We start this week opening the orders website for NEXT. You can also customize your own device
Take a look at: http://www.cinemartin.com/next/buy/

PS: Morgan, Im sorry about the audio, Alex intend to make a first video as soon as he got the device, no external mic, this day seems were too much wind.
