nex-ea50 and pwer zoom

The power zoom would have been nice if it wasn't only opening at F3.5-6.3... F2.8 would have been perfect with this 18-200mm range but this aperture makes this lens a bit worthless.

Yeah it kinda negates the utility if you can't actually zoom without your exposure getting mucked up. Are they not selling it body only?

B&H's price initally for the PMW-200 was the suggested retail price, and then later it came down to the current price of the EX1R, a big drop. The same could happen to the listing for this camera.

Really nice. Of course I'll hold judgment until I see footage and hear from real users. But I like where Sony went with this.

Stop down to 6.3.and get constant aperture - You still have 1/4 the DOF of an EX1 and twice the light sensitivity

Not good enough for you? buy and carry this lens with half the range.. http://www.arricsc.com/pdf/masterzoom_onepage.pdf

What I, no, what WE wanted from Sony was a powered zoom that opens at F2.8 with a constant aperture and a good usable range to go with ours FS700 when we shoot in ENG or documentaries situations.

We are absolutely fine with cinema primes or zooms when shooting a movie we are in need for an auto zoom when going out run n' gun.

Sony basically put out the glasses from their 18-200 and rehoused a new motorized shell. It doesn't looks like a new optical design with a larger constant aperture and it really is a SHAME !

But maybe we will one day see a third party manufacturer that will throw in something decent ?

Dude, with this sensor size you should be grateful such a big range zoom lens exists for this price. And keep in mind that - in addition to the servo zoom - they've probably also made it constant length (as opposed to our 100/700 kit lens which elongates while zooming in).

Of course we all want that, but its not possible..

Its simple physics, the front element has to be larger to let in more light.

Arri make a lens that does this.

Do you think Arri made it big for fun?

OK arri have high quality and probably overengineer by 20% from a lens we would accept, meaning the device is maybe 20% larger that the physical need at a quality we would accept.

Take a coulple of primes you own, maybe an 18 and a 135/2 or suchlike.

Draw a line with the angle of view of the 18 to the point where it is the length of the 135, simply you get a front element of about 140mm, strangely the exact size of lens like the Red 18-80

Fuiji moved to 19mm with their new super lens and got that front element size down to about 100mm

It cant be done

The 18200 is not that bad a lens, I've used much worse for the most of my shooting career, and to have it powered is a bonus.

I'd be quite happy for a 18-135 F3.5 or F4 constant and true manual parfocal for my FS100. It would rarely come off the camera. One can only dream...

I know a fast zoom with a useful range like the RED's one would be big, furthermore if it's motorized...but I would be OK with that !

Hmmm... You wouldn't I guess :)

Why? Because you imagine you need such a zoom lens for R&G, isn't that so? On sticks, you can wrangle with all sort of really fast primes easily - so why bother?

BUT, with R&G such a beast would be just too heavy and big... Not to mention its price, of course.

But - horses for courses.

Its good to see Sony trying something new, but this looks like a more professional version of the VG-20, 16mp sensor, XLR's, more external controls, the periscope loupe and so on. Looks like Sony replaced OSS with the servo zoom on the lens. After 4 years of shooting video with photo lenses I don't miss the zoom rocker anymore, I'll take OSS instead. YMMV...

Here is my take, we'll have to see the final version and specs to find out, but... It should have similar performance to Fs100 both in low light and rolling shutter. This is being produced specifically for event videography, where low light performance is critical. I would argue there is no need to 'protect' Fs-100 as it has been out for 1.5 years and they are already upselling early adopters to the fs-700. Even if it is a nex 5f (or whatever the new model is called) sensor it should have a pro level processor behind it.

Looks like a proper inner-focus, inner-zoom lens, so you can use with a matte box, lets hope. If this gets it right, and not severely crippled relative the fs-100, and ships for about $3500 or less, I could be seriously interested. I actually expected a camera like this to be announced at NAB in addition the the Fs700, as they usually have a camera at this price-point. This is the kind of camera that could make you money all week, and take out and make little movies with on the weekend.

At the very least it is something new to talk about while waiting for the BlackMagic to ship.

Should it? 16mp with significant line skipping vs 3mp with none? Expect vg20 performance, not fs100. I'm sure many will make this mistake though. If sony has done a full redesign for of sensor/processing I would be very impressed and surprised.

Not necessary a bad thing you know, but is a kind of expensive for what it is. IMO at $2500-$3000 could be better option to buy than Canon XF series.

I agree. I wonder if this is the end of the line for the VG series? It was released with a dumbed down featureset and hasn't seen any firmware updates. Seems like its been left for dead. Maybe with this one coming out Sony will finally add the picture profiles that were left off the VG20, but strangely included in the 5n - the main reason I bought a 5n instead of a VG20. Sony did add peaking to the original Nex5 just before the 5n dropped, so maybe there's hope for the forgotten VG.

There's also a screenshot on the Sony Alpha Rumor site that shows the price at $4000 - so maybe that's where B&H will price it once its released - still a little high, the FS100 is a better buy IMHO.

LOMO made in the past quite light (a bit less than 2Kg) and compact 25-80 F3 zoom, they could have go this route and make a nice powered zoom.

But no, they didn't.
