C200: Newsshooter's 'Canon C200 Production Camera review'

Nearly done watching it - Its almost making me think something is strange with the C200. Nearly every comparison or shots I've thought "wow it looks soft... maybe its just the web compression".

I just got through the low light and then the C100ii / C300ii /C200 matching and in every single shot, the c200 looks extremely soft, almost as if it was shot out of focus almost (but for every shot, so I'm sure thats not the case).

The C100ii vs C200 in low light looks like C100ii vs Blackberry... it looks THAT soft (look at the tree on the left)....

ANyone else come away with that impression?

One issue with the C200 that has definitely been overlooked is the position of the exhaust vent. Why would they put that on the operator's side? According to Matt, it is extremely annoying when using the C200 with a shoulder rig. Might be able to avoid this issue if the camera is balanced behind the shoulder on say a Zacuto Recoil rig... but still annoying.

I'm a bit confused. The exhaust vent is in pretty much the same location as the C100 and C300, and that hasn't been a very noticeable issue for me before. So unless the C200 is a lot louder and hotter I wouldn't think this would be much of an issue.

I've shot with the C300mkII, but my main camera was always a 5d2/3/A7s/II (whatever was the popular low light camera). I just got the c200 because it checked all the right boxes for me. There is nothing soft about the images I have been getting. Everything about this camera is fantastic. *but yea the fan is annoying... not as loud or annoying as some though!

seems like a good little camera. Was a bit turned off by the codec/bit rate options, at first, but know that it is still a good camera.

Yes - agree with what others have said. The 4:2:0 mp4 looked better in his footage than the raw light. Odd.

Ok this is strange because the RAW looked noticeably nicer and sharper on my end. What's everyone viewing on? I watched on an iPad with a retina screen and a retina MacBook Pro. I watched the YouTube link, not the Vimeo link in the review:

hey dave12781, what do you think of the images at 60p and 120p? is it softer like matt described? what about audio when you remove the handle/mic unit, is there built in stereo audio?

if its not too much trouble, can you check how long you can record on a 64gb or 128gb card if you're recording on the UHD 4:2:0 mp4? when you pop in a card it should give you the recording time on the top left corner...

FWIW, I am currently running some tests with my C200 to see if I can break the Egodisk CFast cards, get them to fail or drop frames. So far, so good, no issues at all. I just realized that at least on my camera, when I hit record, the fan goes off, but otherwise is running all of the time, which is annoying, but in the grand scheme of things, if the fan goes off when you hit record, I am happy.

It appears that he is indicating his lack of familiarity with Canon cameras as he says "The menu system is OK, but it does take some getting used to if you are not familiar with Canon cameras."

I think anything remotely negative about the C200 has been highlighted in the review.

More than this review, it might be better to wait for the review by the colourist

My guess is that they don't view it as a shoulder operated camera and put the exhaust there so it isn't blowing on the operator's hand/wrist.

I've seen both of those, but only in the review itself. I'll take a look at these separate vids when I have a chance, but if it looks different it's probably an encoding thing. Besides if you played with any of the RAW clips available for download on your own comp, you'll see sharness is definitely not an issue with this camera. Just as sharp as the RAW I used to get from the URSA mini 4.6k to my eye...

Having the fan go off during recording seems like a good feature. But at the point the camera needs the fan the most, it turns it off. That doesn't sound right. If it comes back on at some point during a long recording, I'd feel better that the reliability is not being compromised for the sake of silence.

If it's like the C500, it will come back on in intervals and then eventually stay on at full-blast when the camera is approaching a danger zone.

It initially stays off (when recording) to provide silence during takes. (That was a firmware update in the C500 after people complained the fan was too loud.)

Yes same thing with a RED. The fan keeps the camera cool while idling and cools it back down when you're done with your take.

The REDs offer a bit more fan control (at least the DSMC2 bodies do) where you're able to monitor the temperatures and control the fans yourself if you'd like. Not sure the C200 gets that complex.

They say black shading and calibrating the sensor (auto capture) for various situations also helps.
