News about GH2 firmware

Amazing how quickly these threads go on a tangent. "News about GH2 firmware" not debate about jailbreaking various hardware. At any rate, I think everyone is being overly optomistic for the time being. Lets not celebrate until Vitaliy comes back and informs everyone that the GH2 firmware encryption has been cracked. Lets all cross our collective fingers and hope that this happens before Panasonic releases the GH3.

I posted a link many pages ago :-) But nobody listened to me

I think that people should change the word conspiracy with marketing strategy. Every product has it place at a certain price point. For me, the gh2 feature set has been greatly influenced buy the Af-100. I think that Panasonic have taken a special care about blocking the GH13 firmware and now encrypting the GH2 is because of the upcoming (in the days of the Gh13) Af100 and nowadays the GH2. Imagine if the a $ 800 Gh2 does 50+ mbits Avchd compared to your 24 mbits $ 5000 camera. It would create some chaos in there marketing strategy and product placement. I am not saying that feature wise they are the same, the af-100 is much more in this regard. But how would you explain the end all be all factor (image quality) would be superior in the $ 800 camera compared to the $ 5000 one. Sure you can get better codec bitrate etc with an external recorder, but if the hack also give you clean hdmi output!!! It would take a lot of sales off the Af-100. Many say that the gh2 would be the ideal b-cam to the Af-100, do you think that Panasonic want you to have a Gh2 or buy another Af-100 as back-up?

The dslr revolution has proven one thing, people are ready to use dslr form factor and more so even with clear image flaws (moire, aliasing etc) and not just for amateur production. Nearly everyday I see Canon images in French broadcast television.

LOL - Some of the GH2 vids I have seen are better than many shot on the AF100. go figure....:undecided

Nikon is an old time company with a very established market. They make full size mechanical mirror and prism DSLRS. I don't know if I was NIKON, I'd want to tarnish that with a small sensor mirrorless. My Uncle shoots Nikon D300. He's not at all a proponent of getting rid of the heavy optical prism and mechanical mirror and shutter. Plus, just compare the GH-1,2 sales with any Nikon DSLR. There is no comparison.

Hummm this thread is completely screwed up

Please give a look on a similar thread on the AF100 forum:

Hacking and why Intel and AMD now support it.

I made a long post trying to explain some success stories of hacked products and... :violent5:

I'm realizing that I wrote on the wrong place... Anyway, Nobody (professionals) using an AF100 would use a hacked one if available and they strongly defend the Panasonic choice to encrypt the firmware
We should launch a poll...

Assuming down there they are all professionals, I think that here we have completely misunderstood everything.

PS
about a phantomatic hacked GH2 and a AF100, they will not cannibalize. It never happened before on thousand of hacked appliances. Read my post.

Bye

There are very strong rumors that Nikon will be releasing a Pro mirror less camera in April. You can check it here http://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/ . Nikon has been filling a lot of patent for mirror less camera. Nikon has loss some market share to Sony. In some market taking all the interchangeable lens camera they are third now.

I will only buy the GH2 if its hackable. Til then I remain a happy GH13 owner. I can wait.....
I also agree on the reasonable post about pannys motives, so its not going to be easy to decrypt the FW. Lets hope it is possible.

And the Nikon S-mount rangefinder has just as long of a history as their F-mount SLR's and runs in the same league (and price) as the Leica M series. Nikon was willing to build 2500 "SP 2005" film cameras in 2005 and they sold very quickly. Was it about profit or sales? Not likely, they likely sold many more DSLRs in one week.

With the excitement generated by the mirrorless cameras, as well as traditional crossovers like the Leica M8, M8.2, M9, Epson RD1(s) and especially the new Fuji X100. It's in Nikon's interest not to be viewed as falling behind or even worse - "not getting it".

Henry Ford's company does not sell Model-T's anymore either.
I think Panasonic is overwhelmed to the response of the GH2.
They probably looked at GH1 sales and targeted another 20%.
I own Nikon's, Canon's and now a GH2.
I have owned dozens of Sony BetaCam's and other Sony cameras.
I have not had as much fun as I am having with the GH2 in a long, long time.

YEEEHa!

Still waiting for GH2 to be available so I can buy the damn thing. Then my t2i will join Buzz and Woody in the Sally Ann box.

After the Patch, will the GH2 now be known as GH23?

I'm not sure everyone fully realises the difficulty of getting encrypted firmware to work. While decrypting the firmware is "relatively" easy via intercepting the decrypted firmware on-camera, encrypting the hacked firmware again would be next to impossible if the camera uses some kind of symmetric algorithm (where only Panasonic hold the key to encrypting the firmware).

If the camera cannot accept decrypted firmware out of the box (and my guess is it won't) it would likely require a custom chip installed (i.e like mod chips installed on gaming consoles)

So I think the step after Three would be the biggest hurdle. Then again I am only speculating based on what I would do if I were Panasonic...

Not to sound like a dick but I really think you should compensate more from this, this time. $5-10$ for your GH2 hack this time?

I like your speculations :-)
But they are using encryption to prevent reversing by their competitors (of course competitors dump chips in seconds after release, so it don't help).
Not to prevent modifications.
And such algorithms are called asymmetric, not symmetric.

Even if we can't have a usable hack, I'd still like to know how far the hardware can be pushed. Most likely higher bitrates than the GH-13. Is there a larger buffer?

Buffer must be much larger, 5fps stills, so 5x20mb raw(upto7 though needs to clear buffer) or unlimited jpg at 5fps for 40 frames, 8 secs, and then 3fps continuous. So between 30 and 50mbytes/sec or 250-400mbits/sec!

Well buffer size is one thing, the other thing is bus width. You could have a huge buffer but if you have a bus that limits how fast you can fill that buffer because it's narrow, capacity means nothing. And no, that wasn't a penis joke.
