News about GH2 firmware

Here are some words for VK.

First. You are awesome.

Second. Epic win.

Third. Thank you for being awesome.

Svart has good points. Hmmm.... as long as we don't abuse hacks. No 3rd party cheap batteries. Warranty void if hacked. Good enough?

Perhaps they left the back door ajar, but then again, perhaps they just forgot to lock it. It's locked and barred now, eh?

Yes it is.

But if Panasonic see it to be in their best interest to open up (as I believe they did before) then they will.

This might be dependent on the competition. Imagine if Sony develops its Nex system into an EVF video-capable camera of merit. Panasonic would pay Vitaliy...

Im not for a moment going to pretend that I know anything about Panasonic or the reasons as to why they do things. All I know if that if I were them I would encrypt the firmware (litigation sake) with something that could be easily cracked and then turn a cheek. People who hack their cameras are such a small portion of the overall buyer demographic. I wouldn't design a camera specifically for that niche but I wouldn't try to make things difficult on them either. Hacks, cracks, optimization, customization, etc have been in the game since pretty much the tech industry beginning. No reason camcorders/DSLRs/cameras can't be a part of that also.

Pass a law that says: "Dudes, this proprietary battery crap is bad for everyone AND the environment."
You should be able to use your batteries cross platform with a few universal standardized connectors.

Here is some promised news about GH2 firmware.

First. I have GH2 firmware (obtainded from undisclosed source).

Second. It uses encrypted UPD format. Same as latest Panasonic compacts.

Third. So, we'll have to use approach with compacts firmware dumping that will (with very high probability) result in GH2 firmware decryption.

I think a simple thank you will suffice.

Vitaliy, superb news.

Do we know that this is strong encryption? Simple XOR type encryption seems to have been used by other manufacturers in the past. I know the HV20 firmware was encrypted but reverse engineered by hackers without access to the decryption code.

Is this a Japanese culture thing, or a corporate culture thing? Or perhaps a combo of the two...

If Ikonoskop or RED or Arri had their products improved by consumer force, and it boosted sales massively, would they be insulted, or lap it up? (admittedly these companies are making a more expensive, quality product, without intentional restraints.)

When the DSLR video thing started with the Nikon D90, everybody said Nikon would be the champions of the format, becasue they didn't have the corporate problem of a Pro video division like Canon and Panasonic to lobby them to downgrade and limit pro features. Perhaps this might still eventually be the case, if only Nikon would make something that was really really good, like their stills capabilities. Corporations like Panasonic must be very political over these GH1/2 sales - I mean their completely seperate video division must by applying some serious pressure over this AVCHD limitation/ pro features limitation business, or is there another explanation to degrade your product and hit your own sales?

If tomorrow someone hack the $ 13000 epic lite and makes it record at the same or higher bitrate or at the same frame rate than the $ 28000 Epic? Do you think the Red Boss will applaud him or give him a big hug. I guess he would hunt him down to a lawsuit. Just don' t kid yourself, each and every of these company are here to make money and they have plan and strategies to do that. Should someone get into there way they won' t like it at all. When someone goes to work everyday, at the end of the month what does he expect? A pat on his shoulder... no!!! He expect his salary, hard cash. All those companies are the same, they are not charital organization, be it red or any of these Japanese corporation.

There is a strong rumor that Nikon will come with some high end mirror less camera in April. Doing a high end mirror less camera is already a little revolution in many ways, as until now everybody has concentrated on the low end. We never no, they have patented a lot of technology for video etc. it could be their real push, producing the hybrid photo/video that many have been hoping for.

The Epic L is restricted by boards. At that level, everything possible and the kitchen sink is given to you by Red. I do think they are holding back on cropped high framerates. But we'll see if they open up on that with final release. (Scarlet s35 was limited I feel, unnecessarily)

Very, very good.

Now once this is cracked, please focus also on the internal signal processing.
Maybe we can squeeze out another percent of highlight retrieval/capturing.
The DR of the GH2 is still mediocre compared to the 5DII or Sigma SD14.

Plus I still love to see differnet color treatment. The current "out of cam" pictures still look to digital.

That's not possible, Epic-S bitrates/framerates are hardware-limited. Red already gives you every last ounce of capability the hardware can possibly manage, so there's nothing TO unlock with a hack. And are constantly in development on free firmware updates that squeeze out just a tiny bit more. No artificial limitations to protect market-share. That was Lucas's whole point.

So you did open it and they gave you the opensource firmware to test :-) They are saint at red and the others are evil. The said company who's motto is that everything can change and not to take them by there words. Sorry I don't byte, I am not saying that it is possible to hack the Epic lite into the Epic, but please until someone opens it or try do hack it, no one can say what is possible or not. I am not naive enough to take any word from any manufacturer as truth. Be it Red, Panasonic, Sony etc.

Before Red had only one camera in the red one so they had no segment to protect. The change from of the red scarlet s35 to the Epic lite is exactly repositioning a product that would have cannibalize the Epic for a price/feature that would have been to low. It would have catered for 90% of use for 1/3 the price. They also have looked at the competition (Sony F3 and Pana af-100) and said to them-self why they should ask for 1/3 less (body only) for a product they clearly see as superior. In the end, they are not different than any other company doing business and I am not criticising them to want to maximize profit. But please people, lets not make red as some sort of divine entity or charitable entity for the filmmakers. Do you think that red boss became a billionaire because he ran a charitable company!!!

...Apple didn't kill iphone jailbreak...

You really need to get your facts straight.

http://www.copyright.gov/1201/2008/responses/apple-inc-31.pdf

And in case you don't want to read the whole thing (who would) here's a quote from the opening page:

Apple is opposed to the proposed Class #1 exemption because it will destroy the technological protection of Apple’s key copyrighted computer programs in the iPhone device itself and of copyrighted content owned by Apple that plays on the iPhone, resulting in copyright infringement, potential damage to the device and other potential harmful physical effects, adverse effects on the functioning of the device, and breach of contract.

Dear Vitaliy Kiselev,

Could you please look into the possibility of getting the infamous version 1.34 firmware for the GH-1 from your undisclosed source?

Many of us loyal GH-13 users are concerned that in the event of a future repair or sensor or board replacement, we would be stuck with the unhackable version 1.34 firmware.

Please don't forget us. Thanks.

Yes, but to what extend. Sometime company's are very conservative in their hardware spec. look at the processor world, you can clearly get about 20 to 40% overclocking. If somebody told you 1 year ago that the crappy gh1 with it 17mbits muddy output would become the 50+ mbits GH13 (better than any canon etc) would you have believe them. If in 1 year someone at red sees that buy just overclocking a little bit the chip in the Epic-L they could get or approach the performance of the Epic, sincerely do you think they would give it to you?

Again, I am not criticizing them. I would have done the same in there place. But I am not naive to think that any business are just saints.

Amazing how quickly these threads go on a tangent. "News about GH2 firmware" not debate about jailbreaking various hardware. At any rate, I think everyone is being overly optomistic for the time being. Lets not celebrate until Vitaliy comes back and informs everyone that the GH2 firmware encryption has been cracked. Lets all cross our collective fingers and hope that this happens before Panasonic releases the GH3.
