(newb question) about using nikon with GH1, no stabilizer huh?

I'm beginner, and I just got my GH1 today. I also order the Nikon adapter from Photodiox. The adapter + Nikon lens worked fine, but then i just realize that the optical stabilizer is no longer working, since the stabilizer is not on the GH1 body, but in the lens. So this is BAD then, right? I think I made a mistake? Maybe EOS 7D is better??? Or Pentax (i think they have stablizer in the body)

So what's the alternative to get a good shalow DOF with optical-stablizer? How do you guys usually do? Any suggestions / ideas?

Thanks,
M

getting ahead of yourself there...most lenses' auto functions will not work on the gh-1. that's one of the few downsides to the micro four thirds system (sofar)....look into manual stabilization tools...just don't panic. read the threads here, as many as you can to learn what people are doing to make this camera work for them. watch our videos, ask more questions.

Did you make a mistake? No way. Is the 7d better? i just took a drink of my beer instead of answering that....Pentax? Never in my life saw a VIDEO from a Pentax. s'ppose it's possible.

s'alright, wait til tomorrow....you'll get more rsponses then...

Just don't shake the camera too much. The world didn't always have OIS as standard, and video worked just fine.

These cameras produce a really ugly jerky handheld shake compared to the more macroscopic rolling shake of traditional handheld cameras...I would suggest investing in some kind of handles/gunstock/stabilizer mount...I use my DIY gunstock mount a ton, sometimes from the hip, the shoulder, or just cradling it, and it works really well...

OIS works well for still photography when you are just sampling a fraction of your camera's motion, however for video where you record the motion constantly they don't really suffice. And OIS + rolling shutter + long GOP file format = weird wacky distorted frames here and there during takes.

However I do find that compared to palmcorders in same price level I get much more steady images with my GH1 by using the traditional still photography grip of left hand under lens, right hand partly under the body, both elbows tucked into my body and the electronic viewfinder pressed against eye brow. A grip one can't do when filming with Nikons or Canons due to the disabling of the optical viewfinder in liveview video mode. Up to 35 - 40 mm I get usable handheld footage with the GH1 as it came out of the box. Check out 'Closing Time' in my sig link. But if you want to use the LCD you need a external support of some kind unless going really wide.

This inexpensive Manfrotto shoulder/chest brace works very well for me. I use it as is without a monopod.

But no matter what, when you start reaching real tele field of views, 50mm and longer nothing will make the footage truly steady but a tripod or, if camera needs to be in motion, a dolly.

I don't shoot handheld video, and find that OIS is a GREAT way to ruin an otherwise perfect shot. Even on traditional video cameras. OIS is good for home video, I guess....kid's b-day party, soccer game, you-tube videos, etc. But on a stabilized shot, the OIS can kick in and cause your image to jump around for no reason. The GH1 kits lens does it as well...I tried it. I turn it off.

And BTW, auto functions of other brands not working on the GH1 would not seem to me as a "downside" to the M-4/3 system. I didn't know other systems' lenses were interchangable and maintained auto functions. I guess I could be wrong. ;)

Good luck!

thank you guys for all your feedback.
there's something else i notice on this GH1, flickering lines (both horizontal & vertical, but vert is more noticable) on the LCD screen, but it actually appears in the movie/photo result.
With the lens cap on, you still can see the flickering lines (in the black bacground). Is my cam defective? I posted the issue here:

It sounds like the sensitivity is too high. What's your ISO set to? You'll need to upload video before we can say for sure.

you are absolutely right...when i made that statement, it was because it seems like the lack of the auto functions is a bit of a dealbreaker for some people shopping this cam. i HAVE this cam. and i'll work around the issues. perhaps "downside" wasn't the right word.
