how would something like a Zoom H2 work for audio ? Unfortunately my camera does not have an audio Input (D90), so i need to work with a stand alone solution for now.
I've been reading a lot of audio posts, and I'm still not sure about this: are people booming their shotguns? Or are they camera-mounted (which I thought was a no-no)?
I'm going to do indoor and outdoor sound and I realize the oktava probably won't be too great for outdoors, but would I boom a shotgun?
First off.. Im a complete noob at sound so I found this thread very helpful.

If I had my choice from this list I would definitely go for the shoeps - hands down or up. Still in the $200+- price range the oktava does the job nicely. It seems that certain mics cause resonance at certain frequency levels and thus create an artificial sound. The shoeps on the other hands comes in nice and CLEAN - as if the person were sitting right there in front of you - which I believe is the desired objective when recording sound (FOR FILM - unless a distorted or artificial sound is sought). Thanks to this thread, nonetheless, I now know what Im looking for as far as recording voice. Here three terms come to mind: presence, palpability and now my new term CLEANLINESS.
But thats not what this thread is about... I am very concerned with mic distance to subject - given that my objective is sound for film - and distance is critical. I would like more information on this subject.
I have these questions:
1) What mic's are good for short, medium or long distance?
2) Does phantom power extend the useable range of a mic?
is there somewhere where thers an update with the products 2 years later from the first post?
Well since I am doing this more as a hobby maybe I should stay away from this and go with a more friendly mic? Reason is I don't usually boom op but have a friend do it. I'm usually being the director and DP.I concur with Richard, the eBay seller's picture and statement are in conflict.
Even with a genuine Russian 012 , there's the infamous Oktava quality control issue. I always recommend getting an Oktava from the The Sound Room http://oktava.com/home were you're guaranteed a quality pick.
That said, the 012 still isn't a good mic for an inexperienced boom op, due to the handing noise and other issues.
