New Tascam recorder

Got the recorder! Man it's really light, not a bad thing at all! Anyways, the one thing I don't like about it is having to hit record once to prep it into standby mode, then having to hit it again to get it to record. I wish it was constantly in standby mode.

edit: anyone have any suggestion for a nice bag that will fit my mix-pre, my dr40, and a few cables? Porta-Brace?

Hey damianicus, just curious, which FIIO did you use? I have the FIIO E7 Dac/Amp that I uses with Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros (80 Ohm)

Jaw, many recorders have to be armed before recording. If you wish to constantly monitor even when rec arm is not enabled you can turn monitoring on.

Awesome! just figured it out, thanks :)

anyone have a
Porta Brace MX-24? I'm looking to fit a MixPre and DR-40 in the same small bag, I think this might be a good choice, but want to know if there is enough space for the dr-40 as well.

Hi Guys, Are there any more reviews/experiences with the DR-40? Ideally I'd be getting this to eventually pair with two wireless Senn Lavs: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...ser_EW_112P_G3_A_EW112_p_G3_Camera_Mount.html

Once, y'know...I have money to burn.

But, the fact I can't adjust the two XLRS separately gives me pause. Although, I'm assuming that with these wireless lavs, I can adjust the levels independently of it and we'd be okay. I like the fact that it records a safety track too.

For now, I have a Senn MKE-400, so I'd probably just use that with the XLR input until I get some more $$$!

Wait, you cant adjust the levels of each channel separately on the DR-40? Hmmm. Hey if all you want is to record wireless, why not try the Sony PCM-10?
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...10_BLACK_PCM_M10_Portable_Audio_Recorder.html

It's got much cleaner preamp, and with a simple Y cable (or if you're a professional you use a MixPre preamp) you can plug in 2 wireless units. I'm not sure about individual channel levels, but it's a solid, clean, reliable unit. But also, if you have a preamp like we all should, the recorder hardly matters. A MixPre has 60db of clean gain and limiters on the input and output. All the level control you need... But I get it. You want to just start recording now. Well, the Sony will sound better for your purposes.

I like Sony, but there's no XLR and the two wireless lavs would be mixed together?
Looks like this would be the most ideal choice: http://www.amazon.com/Marantz-PMD66...X51W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323069896&sr=8-1

Except at $600 you're approaching decent mixer territory (MixPre is $665 on B&H), which is far more purpose-built and ergonomic for monitoring and adjusting levels while recording. You can then choose any decent recorder regardless of their preamps, monitoring, or level adjustment capabilities

I think I give up. I've been looking at this stuff for days and I can't figure out what to do on a budget to get two microphone sources recorded for DSLR

Right now, you have only one mic... correct? It's also not even wired for XLR (that takes an adapter). The DR-40 has the drawback that it cannot adjust record levels independently for each input, but with a single mic that doesn't matter. Besides, the safety track feature is a pretty favorable "plan B".

Consider the DR-100, though, which does have individual input levels.

Once you get into the realm of investing in two of the G3 systems, you should probably look at a mixer anyway (along with a better shotgun)... in which case individual levels on the recorder won't matter so much.
