C300: New talk about C300 MK2 organized by Zacuto

Dangit I started watching this, went to make some tea, came back and it'd disappeared. Guess someone forgot to make it private. We've all done it.

I watched it this morning. They had some audio issues, which I'm sure they are fixing. Steve from Zacuto also slammed the the design of the new metal hot-shoe support, along with the quality of the viewfinder. It defiantly made the Canon Rep uneasy.

Zacuto felt that the supports and viewfinder could be improved upon? Hmmm... Hopefully, some company will design some products that will give us the opportunity to purchase those needed upgrades.

Keen observation. Of course, I probably won't be buying the C300 mark II for this reason. Its weight is edging too high to be practical shooting handheld in the existing form factor, so you almost have to rig it. I shoot with a C300 mark I, and find it pretty much maxing out my ability to shoot handheld. I don't like rigs since I one-man band everything. I was at a shoot recently where there was a cameraman with a fully rigged FS7 with Matte Box and everything. I was entertained by how it took two people and about 40 seconds to change a lens. Me, 4 seconds.

At this point, I'm waiting for the right 4K camera. It's not the C300 mark II. Maybe the C100 mark III? Or a Sony. FS7 is a bit bulkier than I want, but at least you can put the thing on your shoulder without rigging. And it has a 100mbps 4K rate. 250 is just too high for my storage needs.

Of course Zacuto is going to say that, they make support and viewfinder products and they want you to buy them. You didn't really expect them to say "The C300 Mk2 is absolutely perfect, you don't need any of our products.".

They will say anything about anything to make their products look appealing. That's just good business.

The 4K market is hideously throttled at this moment but maybe the release of these three new Sony 4K cameras will break the ice a little.

I wonder what would they found to slam about the new hotshoe handle support and VF. They became metal, stronger, they put an easier lock lever, a punch of mounting screws/points all over so you don't need 3rd party adapters...

I have to admit that I have somehow accumulated a full range of Zacuto gear, despite knowing that their pricing and sales strategy is a bit underhanded. They often just have the best option when I am trying to decide the easiest and lightest way to rig something. At this point, I've cobbled together what is essentially one of their Recoil V1 rigs complete with the Tornado and handgrip relocator. I have to admit, it is a great, light, well balanced set-up. I just did a shoot alongside an FS7 and didn't feel like his set-up was lighter or superior in anyway. At this point, I am perfectly happy working with a more modular solution like the Canon and Zacuto system rather than an all in one shoulder mount camera. I do, however, think that Zacuto took a step back with their new V2 of the Recoil rig as it just looks a lot more cumbersome and makes it harder to strip parts away and adjust the camera when you change a lens.

@Cpreston Agreed.

The new version of the VCT baseplate I saw last week at Cinegear LA is pretty great. It has an additional dovetail so the camera can slide back and forth without loosening the bottom screws. Will smooth out adjustments on missmatched sized lenses.
