FS7: New Sony PXW-FX9 with venice features and 6k full frame

fs7 and fx9 EVF plugs unfortunately not the same .. I hope they throw a fx9 plug on a 350 Lcd ,as it seems they are doing it for the fs7 ENG kit ..

Für die Deutsch sprechen. Bu the rest of us can still watch it.

This isn't necessarily critique of the Fx9, but does this video look quite "video-y" to anyone else? It's in 25p but it almost looks like HFR. Maybe it is just that there is no diffusion on the lens and no hazer was used for the scene so everything is really sharp.

I wish the part showing the on-screen display had turned the display off temporarily so we could know if the REC tally remains in the VF display when the rest of the display is disabled. Do we have an answer on that yet? Do any of Alistair's FX9 videos mention it?

Regarding the "ENG" option for the Fs7, what sort of connector is used to connect the LCD? Same as the stock Fs7 LCD? If yes, that suggests that the LCD won't mate with the FX9 given that the Fx9 has a different connection than the Fs7.

Yep. Custom-mode still has that video zing. S-Cinetone is an improvement, but it's not particularly cinematic, despite what Alister says.

To me that video is shot like video and then it will look like video. Cinetone looks to be a nice option for delivery to a client to edit themselves but I rather shoot Slog3.

Yes fx9 EVF plug is different from fs7.. but the fact they have made a plug for the fs7 ,then presumably they can do the same with the fx9.. if there is a market for it.. I wonder if the video ish is to do with the 6k down sampling being "sharper" than the 3k debayer 4K of the fs7/f5/55..?

I'd rather start with a sharper image. No doubt the down-sampled 6K is going to be sharper than we're used to seeing on our other Sony cameras. I can always add a filter or soften in post.

loved the presentation. I skipped over parts, but saw the stuff that’s new and comparisons to the FS7. Obviously the autofocus tests are fun to watch since the tech is pretty amazing. Still has some of the weird gotchas that all lower tier Sony’s suffer from. Like the SDI outs all showing the same lut. So if you want log and lut simultaneously via SDI you can’t. I like that they addressed the issue in S&Q where you couldn’t have a lut. You still can’t see a lut but the workaround is that you can use gamma assist mode in S&Q now. And gamma assist is literally just the Rec 709 (800) lut.

Some new info on the dual ISO. I was curious about rating the iso down like the Varicam’ do. So if you’re using ISO you can’t drop below the base ISO in high or low. But if you’re using gain you can stop -3db which is half a stop from the base iso. Really this is not a big deal because even at 4000 ISO base this camera seems to be very clean, not like the Varicam that does get quite grainy at base 5000. Seeing the noise at 12,800 iso on a cinema camera is impressive. Alister says it’s less noisy than the A7Sii which is a bold claim.

The part about the A7sii got my attention too. From a resolution standpoint that shouldn't be possible, but I suppose it did come out a long time ago now and technology has advanced.

One thing I found confusing was that of the 2 SDI outputs, that the 12G was only useable for 4K 560 and 60P , and correspondingly the 3G was not good for that output . Did I get that correct? That would mean that functionally there is only 1 SDI output which would be a considerable disappointment to me.

Yeah, I found that confusing too. As I understood it 12G SDI is 4K 50/60p only. 3G SDI is HD up to 60p. And the HDMI is 4K up to 30p.
Which means that if you want to record to an external recorder and switch between 25p and 50p for example, you’d have to also switch cables? Combine that with the 5K crop in FF and you have a rather convoluted system when recording externally.

I've used both of these in the past and would do so again if I needed 2 x 3G SDI out at the same time if only one of the SDIs on the FX9 is 3G. They are small taking up very little space when mounted on a camera and require no powering. I preferred the Apantac DA-2HD as it has the input on one side and the two outputs on the other. It was easier to configure using short Mini-SDI cables like below.

On the FS7 you can set one SDI to show log and the other with Lut so I guess this will become true for the FX9 if it isn't at the moment?
