FS7: New Sony PXW-FX9 with venice features and 6k full frame

I don't see why the 18-110 wouldn't work in crop mode.

J Brown , Can you tell us what your settings were for matching the FS5 to the FS7?

I ended up with setting gamma to Cine 4 and color mode to Pro to match my FS5 to my FS7 with Slog3 and the 709a LUT. And I lower detail to -7 on the FS5.

Losing Center Scan is unfortunate;y a really big deal. I don't use it that often but when I do its cool. Of course one can always just shoot 4K and crop it in post.

Cy , where did you read about the white balance?

J Brown - Thanks - I'll write that down for reference in the future.

Smooth skin but where's the detail?

Go to 1:30 to see detail. Sony's low noise and FF shallow DOF + YT compression = low apparent detail. It's a particular look. Shoot deeper DOF, add grain in post before YT upload.
PBloom's tests showed lots of 6K => 4K clean detail.

I'm a bit confused about what the S- Cinetone is. I gather its a picture profile which sounds like its not part of Cine EI , but does that mean its just a Custom color setting for something like a hyper gamma? That doesn't sound like something to crow about .

I've read that it handles highlights really well also but then How does it relate to Slog ? How does it fit in with Sony's gamma system?

Youtube is the worst! Sony should take a cue from Panasonic and post these videos on Vimeo.
FWIW, a lot of Pocket6K shooters uploaded their files to YouTube in 8K to avoid the compression artifacts.

On the other hand, HDR can look really weird on the older monitors.

So, the lesson is 8K and no HDR. And 4K with no HDR.

The noise levels at high ISO's (greater than 12,000) really caught my eye. Philip Bloom shot some high ISO samples here:

That's one thing the FX9 is going to have over the Canon C500 MKII.

I don't see this market shooting much raw footage. It's nice that there's a way to go that route if you need to but this thing is going to be shooting unscripted television, tons of interviews, and lots of docs.
If you're shooting a commercial in raw, that's a different camera, IMHO.

That looked incredible. Noise didn't jump out at me but I wasn't looking for it either.

Download Philip Bloom's ProRes file. It's just a camera test but it looks so much better this does after Youtube destroyed it.

The download links are at the bottom of the page linked below.

Thanks for linking to that Gary. The image quality is outstanding. The 12,800 ISO performance is remarkable, and totally usable (for almost any application).

People keep talking about this mid-range of cameras with the FX-9 and C500 MkII, but if that footage is any indication, this doesn't look to give up any ground to the high-end (in terms of image quality at least). With the downsampled sensor, this isn't '4k' as we've known it for the last 6 years. This is 'true' 4k, and it's a noticeable step up.

The autofocus performance looks remarkable too. It certainly looks to have matched Canon's dual-pixel AF (which has set the bar for the last few years).

Really exciting times to be making images.

Cy , where did you read about the white balance?

"A question that immediately came up was whether color temperature could be changed in Cinema EI shooting as opposed to just the three available presets. Sony engineers tested it on the spot and confirmed that indeed Cinema EI white balance can be adjusted manually."

A comprehensive explanation as to why earlier Cine EI had three fixed WBs. At the end he explains why the Venice doesn't have this limitation:

"The only exception to this is the new Sony Venice. Venice has enough dynamic range and enough internal processing power to allow you to make a wide range of white balance adjustments in camera. Hopefully we will see some of this flexibility trickle down to the next generations of lower cost Sony digital cinema cameras.

I guess the FX9 is the first of this trickle down to have more processing power and dynamic range.

Unlike Canon with the 500 II where you have two crop modes S35 and S16 the center crop on the FX9 is now S35 only as opposed to the center scan S16 mode on the FS7. S16 center scan on the FS7 allowed us to use B4 lenses with units like the B4 to S16 E-Mount adapter from MTF.

FX9 is really a mixed one. On one hand many great features and on the other hand the usual limitations in Sony cameras.
It should be possible to do another crop besides S35 so maybe it`ll come in a firmware a few years from now.

FX9 is a sweet camera but I’m waiting for the little brother.

It's possible they might introduce the S16 center scan later in firmware. Like they did in v3.0 of the FS7 updates. If they don't then Sony's new intelligently connected B4 to E-Mount adapter is going to be a bit of a miss when it comes to the FX9. I use the S16 HD center crop a lot for B4 broadcast football, motor sport and entertainment shows. I just hope if and when they bring out an FX6 that they don't cramp its codec selection. It needs 50/60p UHD and it needs to get away from the rather inflexible and limited camera setup structure that the FS5 runs which is inherited from the still camera family. It needs to have a full SMPTE type matrix and sub-matrix to allow proper camera setup and matching in multi-cam situations.

And there in lies the reality when dealing with cameras priced in the 10k(ish...and below) range. And i don't think its just Sony, its a thankless task for any manufacturer pricing a camera in that range because you simply won't please everyone...just ask the internet!

I read it has s16 crop mode .. it would be nuts to not have it for the target audience .. and you can change the WB in S.Log..

Really! Tell me more about this S16 crop. Where did you confirm this? If this is correct then it changes the flexibility and usefulness of this camera quite significantly from my point of view. Means I can still use B4 lenses where jobs call for that sort of reach. I know it has been confirmed re white balance in Cine EI. That's another good jump forward.
