FS7: New Sony PXW-FX9 with venice features and 6k full frame

I think an important point is being missed. The FX9 is marketed as an XDCAM camera. Not CineAlta. This feels more like a broadcast product than anything. Espeicaly with the slot for wireless audio. Very wierd cross-marketing if you ask me. Sony doesn't want this competing with the F55/Venice and it shouldn't. I'd bet that by NAB 2020 we'll see a new $25K CineAlta rig that offers more of what the Venice has. There's a massive void to fill.

People are getting hung up on the FX9 not haveing internal RAW. We still have the issue of RED's patent on internal RAW. Not sure how Sony is going to handle that. If it were possible to throw X-OCN LT into the body (which would have been brilliant) I'm sure Sony would have done it. It's certianly not a problem for XQD cards. Someone had mentioned the larger size of the FX9. Room for extra cooling? We don't know what sort of hardware is inside and what future firmware updates will unleash. Back in 2013 I never would have dreamed I'd get 4K @ 120fps out of my F55, but they made it work.

I’m hung up having to buy a €2500 extension module that makes the camera bigger than I want it to be to be able to get raw output.
For 99% of what I do the internal codecs will be fine, but for the future I’d like to have the flexibility of raw. But I’m pretty sure that I in the future also won’t be wanting a larger camera...

I've been saying this for several years. And one of these years, I might be right.

That said, the promo video had an Atomos piece connected to the camera (was a quick glance), so the Raw vs. X-OCN vs. XAVC -I trilemma might be soon solved.

Funny, but the users over on the RED forum seem more positive about the Fx9 than the users here. Maybe that's because they are more observers in regard to the Fx9 and didn't have any wants or expectations for it.

It has internal ND and XLR ports, of course the Red guys are impressed!

From Ned Soltz on Red shark News
"A question that immediately came up was whether color temperature could be changed in Cinema EI shooting as opposed to just the three available presets. Sony engineers tested it on the spot and confirmed that indeed Cinema EI white balance can be adjusted manually."

YES! this together with dual ISO makes Cine EI much more useful. That is if it includes G/M offset and not just kelvin.

In one interview a Sony representative said they were in talks with Atomos about developing a recorder that can take the raw signal from the FX9. So likely won’t be more than €2000. But as the extension module has no other function I need/want it’s €4500 just to be able to record raw. That’s a bit steep + you end up with a much larger setup than I’d like.

This is the main (only?) reason keeping me from buying this camera. Would like a new camera now-is, and as it’s unknown when both the FX6 and the A7SIII will be released I might be going for the FX9 anyway. Will see after I see it in person at IBC on Sunday.

I really hope Sony isn't planning on requiring a custom recorder for the FX9. If they want the camera to shine they should make RAW recording as accessible as possible by with working Atomos to add support for their existing Shogun series.

Another very important issue considering how commonly I get requests for an FS7 as a second camera - Will the FX9 match an FS7? If so it might be a great upgrade. If not will I be losing work?

That is a very good question and something to consider. Given that the a7s is regularly used as a B-camera to the Fs7 despite the differences between the color science of the two cameras, I want to say "yes". For all practical purposes the Fs7 will match the Fx9 enough. I guess it all depends upon how closely you need the two to match.

What about the same question, only applied to the C300MkII and C500MkII. Are they the same color science? How well will they match?

One note here that I've not seen mentioned: the LCD on the Fx9 is not the same as the LCD on the Fs7. The Fx9's LCD is 720p. Don't know what it is on the Fs7. Just know that the Fx9's LCD is being touted as higher resolution than the one for the Fs7.

Personally, I think FX9 matches Canon better than the old Sony models. It's a much warmer image, at least, off what meager baked-in footage is currently available.

I shoot Fs7 and Fs5 side by side and have them matched so spending some time to match Fs7 to Fx9 would get them close enough.

I bought the 28-135 kit with the fs7 when it came out then got rid of the 28 zoom because it wasnt wide enough and got the 18-110 which is a great all rounder lens. If I replaced my fs7 with the fx9 would the 18-110 work with it in crop mode as it's not a ff lens? I really wouldn't want to go back to the 28-135.

I don't see why the 18-110 wouldn't work in crop mode.

J Brown , Can you tell us what your settings were for matching the FS5 to the FS7?

Is there any news yet about white balance in Cine Ei mode ?
Can you still shoot in crop mode and center scan?
Top speed in crop mode 4K?
User LUTs with Slog2?
LUT's in Custom?
can you see the name of your LUT in VF?

Cine EI white balance yes by button or dial it in (yes! yes! yes!)
Crop is S35 and so far to the best of my discoveries no HD S16 center scan crop mode
Top speed in crop??? Don't know yet
Sadly NO S-LOG2
LUTs in Custom? Not to my knowledge so far.
LUT names? Not to my knowledge so far

The noise levels at high ISO's (greater than 12,000) really caught my eye. Philip Bloom shot some high ISO samples here:

That's one thing the FX9 is going to have over the Canon C500 MKII.

I don't see this market shooting much raw footage. It's nice that there's a way to go that route if you need to but this thing is going to be shooting unscripted television, tons of interviews, and lots of docs.
If you're shooting a commercial in raw, that's a different camera, IMHO.

The FX9 LCD screen is now 1280 x 720 whereas the FS7 screens are 960 x 540 from memory

That has been confirmed to the best of my knowledge. The 18-110 will work with the S35 crop. What is different unless someone has heard otherwise is that the HD S16 Center Crop mode has gone so no double up to 12 x with the 18-110 as you can do on the FS7 in HD Center Scan crop. What will be nice if you need it is that you can use the 28-135 in S35 crop mode in 4k and give yourself the extra 12 x reach. Remember on the FS7 the Center Crop is HD only. FX9 should give you the same as when using the 28-135 an an A7III when you go into APSC crop mode. References have already been made to the effect that on the FX9 the S35 crop in 4K has less rolling shutter than in FF which is to be expected I guess.
