FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

Have you seen the "Finished exporting" dialog on top?

Because the export is really quick here ( iMac i7 3,4GHz, 24GB Ram, OS X 10.9.5)
and I found the exported ProRes file in the folder where the original clips are located.

We should put the brakes on - much to fast with a new software... ;)

I can say now: I'm really surprised how easy I can handle the SLog3 files within Catalyst
or Resolve to delog them or to just transfer them to any 709 files the way I want.
Just start with one of the Sony LUTs.

I prefer the LC_709TypeA profile as it is very close to the Arri Alexa LogC-to-709 stuff.
It gives avery nice starting point for grades, still looks cinematic and flat, but has a
much better response to "normal" grading techniques than log-footage.

Yes, I feel prepared for the camera now!

Hi folks,

Just a few things I'd like to share with you concerning the availability of the camera.

My dealer phoned me today and told me the camera should be available the week of November 10 (so in 3 weeks)

This is for camera only, kit camera with lens and XDCA-FS7 extension are still scheduled for early-mid December.

In this 3 weeks period they should receive one demo only exemplary. I believe it will be the same for other dealers.

Cheers,
Stéphane.

I don't know if that was clarified yet or not in this thread but... What will actually come out of SDI output's from FS7? Is that going to be 4K 4:2:2 10bit uncompressed? RAW only through their extension, right?

I think that Mitch from CD said, that the two SDI are only HD. One with overlay and the other without. I think the sampling is 4:2:2 and 10bit. But not sure.

This is a real shame, especially when the FS700 shows that you can send a RAW signal over the SDI. Probably just another way to make an extra $2K off FS7 users. Plus, adding the back attachment just makes the camera go from a nice looking camera to one with a tumor.

The back attachment is the one thing that really bothers me about the camera. Besides that, I think it's really cool.

Anybody know if is possible to move the viewfimder to the other side? I used to have the camera on my left shlulder and use my left eye

I think you can. I saw a Vertical / Horizontal flip button on the EVF. But then the buttons will mostly be on the blind side for you which could be annoying.

Dan Chung at Newsshooter.com posted pictures on twitter of his newly purchased FS7. The next few weeks we should see more rolling out. I know I'm high on a Canadian vendors list but who knows how Sony will roll things out. I was always told early November so I think that is very likely.

Ahead of the camera arriving, does anyone know a good place for buying XQD cards at respectable prices? Also I see these Lexar Professional cards are being discounted due to be discontinued. Anyone know if they are fast enough to cover all the FS7's framerates, bitrates and resolutions?

I asked a Sony rep about card class and format because the slides from provideocoalition.com show all bitrates working for S type cards but 180fps wasn't listed. The rep confirmed that the G series of cards is needed for 180fps but all other bitrates work with the S cards.

I might even get one of the real cheap N cards to use on long rec HD jobs.

According to Juan Martinez, N cards work fine for HD. The price differential between S and G isn't that great (particularly when one has been accustomed to buying more expensive media). B&H shows 64gb S card at about $298 and the G card is $363. Additionally, the current USB 3 reader handles G cards but the forthcoming reader will only handle G-- no S or N.

That is weird that the new card reader isn't backward compatible. I could see that getting messy in the field unless you have one of each or only buy the G cards.

I've got a feeling that down the road they're going to enable 4K/RAW output through SDI's. It's a tactic for the beginning to sell as much as possible of those attachments to rentals, studios etc. Once market will be a little bit saturated, companies capable of buying it will own one, they will enable that output to make FS7 more appealing (for boosting sales in the middle of a product cycle). Similar tactic to that with RAW recorder and 7Q I guess.
