FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

You can say it this way.

But in the end it's the double readout of the sensor:
1) 14bit hi amplification gain pass (for the shadows)
2) 14bit low amplification gain pass (for the highlights)

1+2= Alexa 16bit RAW signal with very smooth highlight rolloff

So basically this is a form of HDR.

Confirmed street price on XDCA-FS7 accessory unit is $1999 and the Baseplate/LW Rod is $990
Buried in an earlier post are camera street prices: $7999 body and $10499 with 28-135 f/4 lens
I have not yet found any pricing on XQD G series cards

With the extension unit, FS7 can output 12-bit raw to the Odyssey 7Q using C-D's FS700 option ($750 purchase)
Atomos Shogun will not ship with FS700/FS7 support but promised in future upgrade

So not much of a discount for bundling the lens. I had hoped for bigger discount as a package. At least I'm not going to wait around for 'kits' and just buy the camera and get the lens later. I would love it if the 28-135 would get picked up at rental shops.

Thanks Ned. Does the camera require the XQD G series or can it run on other QXD cards?

So, about 17K for full kit (camera, lens, XDCA-FS7, Odyssey 7q with 2 512gb cards and FS700 option)?

You've stumped me on xqd requirement. My guess is that it will require the G cards for 4k but the S cards would be adequate for HD. And remember that it just ships with UHD. 4k is a future upgrade as is ProRes. It will write ProRes to the internal cards but requires the optional back plus presumably a paid firmware update

Ned

I use XQD 180MB/s for 4K (4096x2048) @ 60p in XAVC which is 600mbps so the newer 400MB/s should be more than adequate. The higher the speed, the faster off loading gets.

Saw this slide on ProVideoCoalition

It would appear the S cards cover all recording modes. I would guess the S Cards go from 32/64 and the G line are faster but take the larger capacities like 128 etc. Looks like the cheaper N cards would be gun for long rec HD jobs.

Thanks. Just looked through the press material Sony sent me and indeed that chart was present. Obviously missed it so thanks for posting.

The more I'm looking at the form factor of the add-ons for raw recording, it certainly looks like the streamlined setup of the F5(5) with the R5 will retain the edge ergonomically. And losing the side-panel operation is a step backwards - but I suppose it should be price-points considered. The sensible orientation of XLRs and the like is certainly a step in the right direction - hopefully the camera will be a big success and Sony will carry that focus on ergonomics forward with every new camera they make (though ideally keeping the streamlined form of the F5(5)).

Operationally, now that the actually purpose and simplicity of 'All Files' has finally been unearthed on the F5(5) (it's something that Sony should have shouted from the rooftops when the cameras were first released), I find I have very few things left to complain about - I no longer need to even press the Menu button on set except to format cards - which removes my primary gripe with the camera.

I'm curious if anyone has actually compared the FS7 to an F5 side by side yet.

I've been assuming that same menus, same codec, same gammas & color space add up to same picture quality. However my friend pointed out that they could have different DSP (digital signal processing), analog to digital conversion, bit depth of signal processing, debayer etc- all of which could be a step down from the F5. He notices this with the FS700 for example.

Any thoughts?

Lenny I agree, there may be some differences in processing indeed. But we've recently seen the types of shenanigans Sony has been pulling, so I wouldn't put it past Sony at this point that an F5 is actually crammed into the new FS7 body somehow.

That being said, when Alister tested RAW from FS700 vs F5 is said there was hardly any difference.

Just got the scoop from Juan Martinez on the difference between S and G cards. The camera can shoot S cards in all resolutions. The advantage of the G card is double the transfer speed for copy or ingest.

If not it can be done in post from 4K source but that means 60p max if you're looking for HFR. That's one thing great about a "true" and "real" 4K sensor, you can use s16 lenses and crop out the center and still end up with HD...

The FS7 with B4 2/3" lens would also be quite a good combo.

But the true 4K camera is the F65 right?

I was more poking fun at the Amira. The FS700/FS7/F5/F55 at least has a ~ 4000 pixel count.

The F65 would be an 8k sensor in marketing speak.

Everything depends if you are counting pixels, or measuring resolution.

My point was that you can crop out the center from 4K and end up with something good. It's why I went with the F55 originally, because it had 4K internal.
