FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

Hah , it ought to since it costs almost as much as the FS7 . I'm sure the FS7 EVF won't be quite up to those standards . Hope its useable though.

Sam, I'm in transit so hve not had a chance to look, but I did put some notes on your spreadsheet. Hope it helps you in your breakdown. Let me know if there are questions.

Cant see any updates - maybe they did not save.

Yep lets get the frame-rates etc noted correctly.

(I dont think they are up to date on the C-D website)

Best wishes.

Mitch,
I have a question re: your note '4' on Sam's spreadsheet. Note '4' says; "F5 Prores from Sony is only for HD, not 4K. Better/cheaper to buy O7Q for F5". How does the O7Q acquire 4k from the F5?. RAW output is not available. Can the O7Q take the(newly licensed) 422, 10/12 bit, 4K signal available from the SDI port of the F5 and convert/record to ProRes 4k?

How many other cameras can shoot 4k 10-bit 422 intra AND long GOP internally?

None. Especially when you consider 60p frame rates, ie XAVC Intra.

1920x1080 50p XAVC Intra 100Mbps
1920x1080 50p XAVC Long GOP 50Mbps
4096x2160 60p XAVC Intra 600Mbps
1920x1080 HFR 180fps XAVC Intra 360Mbps

Focus peaking on the F5 (with the OLED EVF at least) is tremendous, mine is on permanently and makes confirming focus a breeze.

I agree, on my F55 with LCD focus peaking never let me down. On my PMW300 with Canon eng lens, snap zoom and peaking combo is a go to for me. So I like the fact that there is peaking and snap zoom, the best of both worlds to nail it fast.

The big question for me is the right wide glass with a nice range. A Red 17-50 would be nice. That was always the go to on my F55. Fun to see lower prices and more features.

Focus check (zoom in) is required, and this camera has it with the button in the right place - AND THAT IS SUPER - better than Alexa/F5/Red/700

Yes it is.

But even the FS700 has "expanded focus" on it's handgrip which can be brought in a similar position with
a simple handle relocator (piece of aluminium with two rosettes).

Meanwhile I use expanded focus exactly this way on my FS100 with the FS700 handgrip...

It's definitely not new. At least to me.
It's needed for run'n gun if you don't have an extra monitor!

The trouble with the FS100/700 is yes they have expanded focus but the screens are so badly located on those cameras (if you are on the shoulder) that you will be using an EVF or monitor (which wont have expanded focus)

Also the 100/700 onboard monitors are basically crap - very artifacted in EF mode.

So the only option for expanded focus with the button accessible and the monitor accesable is to use the Cineroid (I think???) EVF which has a lanc (this EVF is discontinued or certainly not too available in the UK)

This camera is therefore IMO the first camera to offer expanded focus in a situation where..
-the focus button is at your finger
-the camera is on your shoulder
-the EVF is at your eye.
-your other hand is available to rack focus.

The fact that the EVF is powered without a second battery solution is also a huge bonus.

And to me that is superb. That is ommited from the AMera and F5 basically to me is, well, Id pick up the FS7 for a bit of RnG over those cams even if I owned them all.

Of course anyone who thinks they can get 4k sharp on a 500px monitor is kidding them selves by a factor of 500/4000

Now if it was only possible to customise the 'Photo' and 'Push Auto Iris' buttons on the FS700 handgrip! That tiny change would make such a huge difference to the FS700...

And while they're at it they should make it possible to adjust focus with the zoom rocker, should be possible since it's electronically controlled on e-mount lenses any way. And since they suck for manual focus anyway it would only be an improvement ;)

To be honest I have to have a very clear think

I went out tonight with my FS100 and just had fun with a super tight little build... and if my content is good (it is) Ill sell it to broadcast even at 23mbs!

I also did a quick talkie on my F3 and that looked hot too.

I guess Ill go and have a look at Pinewood and see if I 'feel' it.

My problems with the 100 and F3 is all ergonomics

There are options like buying a tiny recorder (ninja star) and top end EVF for the F3 to move its ergonomics on from my vlock/SmallHD/BlackMagicShuttle arrangement.

Also a trouble with F3 is that clients dont 'get' them (vs C300) - I need to feel confident that clients will be mad for the cool new sony - and its gonna need a better grade than Dens siko vision to get that vibe going down.

Im realising the value of vibe.

C300 - production company happy
'Shot on Red' for dickeheads
FS700 'the slomo king'

etc

The cam needs 'vibe' to be a keeper!

I hear you Sam. If a client thinks that a certain camera is the only choice it's difficult to sell another tool to them.

Me, I'm so confident in my F3 footage and show that to new clients. You can't please them all but that usually takes away any doubts. If the FS7 will "vibe" as much as the Canon-look from the likes of a 5D and C300 I don't know, but the F3/F5/F55/FS7 are all superior compared to the C300.

I'm getting a SpeedBooster Ultra tomorrow and it will be interesting to see how that'll compare to my 5D3 when the FS7 arrive.

Which is fine with a straight client - but I'm sure I've lost stuff to c300 where that cam was being used by A cam op or as part of a larger multi location production

Sam, get the F5 and be over and done with everything and anything. SR RGB 444 internal? ProRes 4444 coming? 16-bit RAW for the featur films you know you will shoot one day? No dangly external bits. (kind of)

Plus Sony's current strategy is to f@#% over F55/F65 owners anyway so at some point soon the F5 will turn into a F55/F65 magically anyways ;)

"I recently bought the PMW300 as I needed a "broadcast /tv camera with sdi and zoom etc. for local and network calls. At the time I was tempted to sell my FS 100 but held off moving to the FS700 knowing something else would be down the pike soon. The F7 is what I was waiting for. However, last week I had both the FS100 and PMW300 out for a client and it made me evaluate my camera needs. In fact I have not lost any work as a result of not having 4k or a C300 or FS700 . I did loose one job for an American net because the broker didn't know what a PMW300 was and he had: " serious doubts about it being able to do 720p 35mbps. " What can i say to that? Another Am net called an hour latter and booked me for twice the time and loved the camera. Did live hits to L.A. SDI to rattlers and it looked awesome. Sent buddy from the first gig a link for future ref.
But now I am so seriously tempted....I had my eye on he Ursa till my buddy Bill told me it was the size of a TK76 and weighed as much. I will wait and watch and see how the F7 is received by folks but it looks very nice at first glance. Like Sam I have tightened up my FS100 package and got it to a somewhat ergonomic state, and with patience and good glass it kicks out some lovely viz to the card and Ninja2. I have however sold most of my e-mount lenses in favour of Canon, Nikon and Rokinon. I guess the bottom line is future proofing and that is what the doc producers will be looking at.

Sam-- I agree with Dennis. You sound like an F5 buyer. FS7 will do what I need it to do at this stage. I will really miss my F3+Pix240 but I want to be ahead of the market for 4K and want raw capabilities. And as many times as I've shot the FS700, I just really dislike the ergonomics. And want a stronger internal codec when not going out to raw recorder. It does sound like you need more, so pick up an F5 (even used since I suspect a number will hit the market soon). Add the 4K and ProRes options. You will be very happy.
