FS7: New Sony E Mount Lenses Introduced Today plus a new Mirrorless Camera

Thanks for linking to my clip. It is among the clips I shot in Miami with Sony when we had the hands-on with the a6300 and the G Master glass.

What makes the 6300 so impressive for video is Sony's new chip which enables a direct readout and a downsacle from 6K to UHD. No line skipping or pixel pinning. Low light is very impressive. As I noted on the Vimeo page, this was shot at ISO 2000. Native sensor is ISO 800. I'm wading through clips now and will find some ISO 3200 and 6400 that I shot.

I will most likely get a loaner from Sony after WPPI (where all their cameras are tied up) and then buy one.

Please feel free to ask me any questions about the camera.

Hey Ned, could you draw any comparisons of the noise/iso to other cameras, most likely being your fs7 since it's on hand. interested in what the iso 3200/6400 compares to.

Hi Darren

I'll see what I can pull together. Very well might wait until I actually have one in hand so I can control the tests better. Three days of rushing around with the camera didn't allow for time to set things carefully.

I would agree. I intend to use it in conjunction with the FS7 as well as being a carry-cam for stills.

Now, combine it with the new Sony G-Master lenses, which of course can also be used on the FS5/FS7, and you have quite a system.

Other than the sensor size of course, a major difference between the a6300 and A7R II is the absence of chip-based stabilization. There simply wasn't enough room in the body and it definitely would hike the price.

If I don't have a Sony loaner for NAB, I'll buy one to carry around NAB with me.

I had the a6000 already as a B/C/Stills camera and I was very happy with it. Coming from 20yrs of advertising still photography I am often asked when I am booked for video to shoot some stills too. Documentary, portrait of the talent, behind the scenes and sometimes the client gets the idea that he could use the scenery for his print/online ad too. Just in case I always brought a big bag (sometimes two) of Canon DLR equipment. Since the a6000 I only brought this body and no one missed the Canon.

the a6300 arrived today. But what a disappointment: no photo RAW converter neither from Adobe nor from PhaseOne / CaptureOne available. Sony Image Data converter is one of the worst piece of software I have seen in this decade.

I was close to pulling the trigger on the a6300 to use as a B-cam for interviews that I shoot with my FS7. But I'm concerned about reports of overheating over at the dpreview forums. I intended to use it for events when I need to roll for 1-2 hours, so overheating would be a concern. Would love to hear any feedback about this.

This is a common issue with new cameras. Since the a6300 is similar to the a6000 it's likely you can modify the Raw's metadata with ExifTool so it can be debayered in your preferred software.

Thanks for this hint - I checked ExifTool on the fly and I am afraid this is beyond my skills :-/

RAW update by Adobe today but a suprise too when I wanted to mount the a6300 on the gimbal: Sony turned multiport and hdmi port 180° compared to the a6000. Also they are so close now. I have no idea how to mount hdmi and multiport both.
