I was at press introduction in NYC today of new A6300 camera (successor to the A6000).
APS-C. Fastest autofocus ever (Sony says) and shoots HD up to 120 fps and UHD up to 30 fps in XAVC-S. Includes SLog2 and SLog3. $998 US available in March

Lenses

G Master Series
First 3 lenses-- 24-70 f/2.8 85 f/1.4 70-200 f/2.8
Surprisingly lightweight for such fast glass owing arrangement of elements and fast, silent motors.
Very suitable glass for FS5 and FS7 (not to mention A7R II and A7S II).
These are full-frame lenses so obviously consider FOV on Super35 cameras.
24-70 is $2198 US
85 is $1798
Both shipping in March
The 70-200 is shipping in May but no price announced yet

Hey Ned!

Very cool, I saw the live stream today, and all look very impressive. Were you able to test any of the new lenses? Was wondering if the focus is fly by wire, or something a little more conventional?

Thanks in Advance!

I was able to test the 24-70 and 85. The 70-200 was sitting there but not fully functional. My initial impression is that while they are focus by wire lenses, in manual focus they feel much more natural than prior Sony E lenses. Was definitely able to do a good MF without much servo feel. Tremendous improvement. I think Sony is very much concentrating on lens science.

BTW, we couldn't take any images with the A6300. They were tethered in place with their little SD slots sealed. Cameras are still prototype. But the 24-70 and 85 were shipping versions.

Shot some handheld video with the A7R II and the 24-70. Owing to the 5-point internal stabilization of the A7R II, images were surprisingly stable. So I suppose in Sony's higher end still world, OSS is less of a priority in the shorter range glass. Certianly OSS would add to the price and no doubt weight.

But I personally like the A6300 as a replacement for my trusty NEX-6 as a carry cam. I'll buy one for sure.

Did you see/hear anything mentioned if the lenses rely on in-camera corrections? (I believe even the 28-135 does to some extent, no?)

I was waiting for the 4K successor of the a6000 since first rumors in summer 2015. Unfortunately it has no IBIS, no touchscreen and only 24MP instead of 36MP which were almost confirmed at sonyalpharumors :-) 404gram is ideal to mount it under a small hexacopter, that's what I am going to do and therefore ibis and 36MP photo would be a grenade. Probably it's too close to the A7rII

Well, I'm actually very happy seeing (new) 24MP sensor. Full pixel readout would probably be impossible with 36MP without losing details (vide A7RII in full frame). Second thing is that it's low light will DEFINITELY be better then a6000. Touchscreen would be nice with AF, same goes with IBIS but well.. you cannot have everything ;) Anyway with 4K, slog and AF it's a steal.

This is such nit-picking but WHY do they have to go and make the 70-200mm in white and not in black?? The 28-135mm is black. The white colored lenses have always been a pet peeve of mine. They just shout "still photography lens!!!". If the heat reflectivity thing is a legit issue then why did Sony make the Fs7 black? Wouldn't it have been more wise to make it white so as to reduce heat buildup?

Okay, there. Got that out of my system. For now at least.

More importantly, is the 24-70mm G Master par-focal? And how fast is the manual zoom action? Along the lines of the Sony 18-105mm or slower like that of the Sony 28-135mm FE zoom?

Just a reminder to anyone from Sony who should happen to read this- the lens we all want is something in the range of 18-135mm f2.8. With OSS and a manual iris ring. Or better yet a 12-150mm f/2.0 in e-mount. With a physical doubler like the B4 mount tv zooms yielding an effective 12mm-300mm. And many of us would gladly pay $30k for such an animal.

I get a hands-on with the A6300, the 24-70 f/2.8 and the 85/1.4 the last week in February so will be able to report more on both lenses and camera at that point.

Love to see how it performs in low light as well Ned. That is a big factor for many considering the 6300 against the Sony full frames

That's why the 24-105 f4 + the SB ULTRA is such a godsend w/the new 2X center crop capability. We now have a lightweight, 17-150 2.8 equivalent, parfocal lens w/IS!

Is it perfect? No! There's a bit of light loss when zooming and you have to dig into the user menu to center crop. Still fairly incredible combo for around 1200 US.

Canon 24-105mm is parfocal?

Is there not an irony in our being happy that we can shoot with a smaller sensor on our large-sensor cameras? "Hurray! It can finally do what the older and less-fancy cameras could do! WHAT a technological BREAKthrough! Finally my hot new camera can be more like an EX3!" :)
