CAMCORDERS: New Sony Camcorder Z200

Thanks for the report! The possible LANC limitation is a bummer. True rear iris control might be a bridge too far. It would be interesting to see how the controller behaves on a Z200 instead of a mirrorless lens. Maybe the camcorder would be more receptive or flexible?
 
LANC has its limitations. For zoom there are eight discrete steps, there is no hiding that. If you look at the HEX protocol for Control L, Sony implementation. Eight speeds for zoom out and eight speeds for zoom in. Despite that,

Fotga seemed to have been able to buffer those steps and end up with a pretty smooth control of the zoom function. I have also found the response reaction varies between Sony lenses. Again, probably something to do with how Sony have implemented the motor control in their various lenses. The iris. There seems to be no totally variable smoothness to iris change on any G series lens I've tried. Knowing how smooth the LANC zoom control was on the Z90 for example, I would expect you would find very similar performance on the Z200. If you want to get an idea how smoothly you can control the zoom with this Fotga demand, maybe take a look at the example below. It shows slow to faster zoom moves. This clip was a typical virtually non-stop continuous in / out motion tracking zoom. This is an example from the first time I used the Fotga unit. On a recital rehearsal for student dancers. I was still getting used to its zoom 'feel'. I developed better smoothness out of the unit as the afternoon progressed.

Thanks for the writeup. I should have been more clear in what I wrote. I was thinking (hoping) maybe the rear iris control might work better on the camcorder but maybe not. Maybe I can get some time open to consider this camera in the next few weeks.
