New RED camera?

Yeah... lol, there is zero exclusivity with RED. Anyone can shoot one for practically free. That mentality kind of died out a few years ago, the market is so saturated with RED cameras you almost need to go out of your way to avoid them. The only brand that genuinely does carry exclusivity is ARRI. It really is the only one that can genuinely impress people at this point if aesthetics and braggadocio is part of your business plan in helping to attract clients.

I still think RED has exclusivity, but you're right that if you are running with an Alexa you're in a different class.

Man, those mini-mag prices do not fit a $6k body. $850 for the smallest size (120GB). I find it EXTREMELY hard to believe reliable media has to cost that much in the era of CFast cards. I think the average person looking to buy in the $6k range will choke on paying that much for the media.

Also hope you can control the body without using RED's touch screen. I already have a great 5" monitor and a Cineroid EVF. Those would be just fine for me.

EDIT: I just looked up the specs and CFast has a speed advantage over mini-mags, too...

I never understood this either. That price is ridiculous.

That would be great! I'm starting to get tired of waiting. And on a practical side, waiting has cost more than one company sales from me. If BMD had URSA Mini 4.6k's ready to go at NAB, there'd be one sitting on my desk right now. But now there's the FS5 and RED Raven to think about, too...

Oh so true, I was all in on the Mini now I am not too sure.

Also having a RED does carry a certain amount of cache but exclusive it is not.

Wouldn't it be great if we got back to a time when a product was announced once there was a warehouse full of boxed up cameras ready to ship! This is what it's called, this is what it does, this is what it costs - send us payment and we'll ship it out later today!

Totally agree with this statement

Totally and completely out of line on my part. I think Paul's work has an aesthetic that combines beauty shots and flares in such a way where resolution would not be a top priority.

Paul, I apologize. That was a s*%tty way to make a point.
no worries, i asked if this was reduser because that is usually how things go there if anyone says anything contrary to official red doctrine....

but in reality you could not be more off on judging my work....resolution is extremely important for me since i pull frames from my footage and these stills get printed in magazines and even large displays in shows and such.....my usual still file is a 9x12" 300dpi vertical crop from a horizontal motion clip.....so the way i can interpolate the file up in PS and the way that file holds up is extremely important.....
i can tell you that noise, grain, sharpness and actual resolution all play a big part in all this.....DR and color are of course important for the look but have very little to do with this.....
i understand if this is all boring and not really relevant to motion work but since you brought up my work i thought it was ironic that resolution plays such a big part in it:)

this is the big question in all this: the TBD....it will determine the compression setting when shooting at higher frame rates....this can be great or it can seriously neuter the raven....considering the scarlet and epic prices in all this i wouldn't get my hopes up.....

The hope is very little:

This camera is not for everyone it will need something called "lighting" to deliver stella images and given its price point this is precisely the market segment that often compromises in the believe that little or none is required because it has 16stops of DR.

Yes, but any update on topic since then? I'd love to know. Actually, I know a lot of people who can buy this camera body in the $5K-$6K range but will never buy a mere display solution for the same price of a 4K camera with LCD integrated with or not touchscreen...

Yep you don't need a touch screen to operate a dragon.

With this camera not sure because all shots of it have hidden the "handle " side ...so no one knows . But given its price point there will be an alternative. The huge other option is wifi control thru Foolcat for pads, tablets or smart phones best UI interface out there , slays all other options . However there is nothing like "tethered" control for just in case.

This camera needs light to work? Wel I had high hopes for the Raven but this is a deal breaker for me.

... the aura of exclusivity is already gone, people are selling used RED's for under 4K for the brain and sub 8K for a shooting package already. So I totally disagree with that.
There's a big difference between buying a new Bentley fr $350,000 and a used one for $50,000. That's why many premier brands don't offer products below a certain threshold, why others create the "elite" sub-brands (Toyota => Lexus, Honda => Acura, Nissan => Infinity, etc.), others still create the mass market sub-brands (Armani FX) and while some decide to mesh. Many an advanced business degree has been earned via these branding studies but, let's just say, it's easier to go downmarket than up. Mercedes can sell a $40,000 car but Chevy will have a very hard time to be selling anything over $60,000. And, once you lose the elite/luxury status - look at Cadillac - it's a very hard task climbing back.

Insofar as the electronics biz goes, the story is a tad more complicated to the rapidly falling cost of performance. As many have suggested on these forums, the cost of a "big budget" look is getting lower and lower and, in my opinion, a formerly high end independent will find is harder and harder to compete against the major brands because, once the premium early adapters have merged with the meat of the market, the economies of scale and the power of marketing and distribution will win the day. Or, in Red terms, people won't want to pay several hundred dollars for a 120 GB mag.

We are far away to be alone on this one:
