New RED camera?

As an ex-scarlet and later epic owner I am interested but can't get excited.....like the article says....just to add a screen, media, reader and some power solution you are looking at probably at least 6000 maybe more like 8000.....and that is without body....the cheapest dragon starts at 30K? now so there is no way performance will be anywhere near and honestly I wasn't happy with my scarlet and that was years ago.....
when red wanted 20k from me to upgrade my epic I decided that there were better solutions out there for me for much less money....I am sure the new top end models will be great but I don't see how they can bridge the huge price gap without serious quality drawbacks....
i am always excited when such an established company comes out with something new...especially one that has pushed things forward as much as red has.....
we can see how hard it is to come out with lower priced solutions by looking at BM....they are really pushing things and are not afraid to have a few bumps along the way.....we will see how the uursa mini 4.6 will be able to mix things up.....but regardless I doubt red can come even close in terms of price and the under 10K for a serious camera market is getting really crowded....

I'm intrigued by the prospect of a new, cheaper RED camera. Perhaps something like this:

  • NOT upgradeable to a newer sensor
  • Micro 4/3 sensor size
  • Micro 4/3 lens mount (non-removable)
  • 4K Dragon sensor with standard OLPF (non-removable)
  • 4K Redcode Raw recording to C-Fast cards
  • Built-in C-Fast module (non-removable)
  • Built-in side handle with all necessary controls (non-removable)
  • Built-in Redvolt battery plate on the rear (non-removable)
  • HDMI ports for using whatever monitor & viewfinder from any company
  • $4000 for everything listed above

You get RED Dragon quality footage in 4K resolution, with none of the technical difficulties of making it compatible with other modules, and no crazy 6K resolution, or even ProRes (use a Shogun for that). There's no upgrade path for this camera. It's just a great indie film camera. All you need to add are lenses, C-Fast cards, batteries and a monitor. Lenses can be Micro 4/3, or PL with adapter, or Canon or Nikon with Speedbooster.

I think I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

I'm probably going to open a huge Pandora's box here, but anyway, why is it that all RED footage looks so different from Alexa and Sony F65? They all look stunning and breathtaking, but I would describe RED image as kind of sharp and thin as opposed to Alexa/F65 that are more "full", pleasing and smoother. There's something about the colors of RED, too.

Even if the price is a bit higher than expected, I think "4K4ALL" is a good sign...maybe RED is acknowledging the state of the market.

Not much love for RED here I suppose...?
RED was offering 4K when others where still internally up-sampling to HD...

Today RED's market analysis must factor in cameras like the URSA, the FS7 or 4K consumer (stills)cameras with external recording,
even if they aren't direct competitors.
But with 4K becoming a staple now and RED on its way off to 8K-land, there's a) no exclusivity to what they've been offering so far
and b) they have new/better/sexier stuff to sell to the high-end marked.

So I guess now it's all about paving the way to a RED workflow, let the indies get used to their product (in 4K and 60p max) and post workflow
so when the projects call for "more", those users stick with RED and just rent a Epic Dragon or Weapon...
Smart move.

Don't hate Red, just skeptical they will launch a camera that is competitive with the 4k Ursa Mini in terms of price. I fully expect it to be at least several times more expensive when you factor in all the Red stuff you'll have to buy to get it up and running.

This.

Same here... plus I've rented the Red, EPIC and Epic Dragon for different feature shoots so don't beat me up... lol

If it's up and running with similar features as the 4.6K Mini for a bit more - maybe $10K max with everything - I would very much consider it.

No hate, it's just that so many people were bitten by a Red drug. They've promised upgrade path but every single time it was so expensive that you'd be better of selling it and buying new one instead. Also customer support was pretty weak at times. Nothing from my own experience but I've heard stories about this from many sources, so it cannot be mistake. It seems that Red is a great highe end/rent camera, but not for single operator owners. That's why I am sceptical as well.
It's quite funny that BMD want's to go higher, and Red possibly going lower market :)

I think RED is about to do something very new with this camera, Jarred has been dropping some hints for a while. We saw the new 4.7 screen and 120gb Mini Mag, both which work well for the Epic and Weapon camera but kinda a bit out of place but now they make a bit more sense. They just did ProRes on the Weapon as well. One thing that was odd is Jarred talking about the new X5r cameras that DJI just did. I have a feeling we may see that sensor in this body. My guess right now is

- Plastic / Metal Weapon Style body
- 4K 60p Prores Shooting
- 4K 30p RAW
- EF Mount based on how far back the sensor is
- I think this will also be a bigger version of the X5r camera so it will be Super 35 so we can have 5K or even 6K stills mode but only recording 4K so thats the crop
- Non Upgrade-able
- Made for Entry Level but will be great gimbals and crash cam for big productions.
- Price will have to be aroudn $4000 for the body and $6000 for a ready to run kit to fight with the Ursa Mini and still be better then Scarlet MX but still way below the Scarlet Dragon

That's right. They either have to find an overseas (or low-cost via automation) manufacturing plant or basically fight a losing battle because the cost of getting a "good enough" image is getting lower and lower. In fact, the image quality from these new Sony cameras exceed the image quality from pretty much every consumer display available currently and years into the future. The high end TV and the big budget feature niche of the market will obviously want the best product that they can get their hands on - i.e., Alexa65, as of today - but the rest will be perfectly content with FS7 and C300 MKII. And this leaves the big boys in charge because only they have the economy of scale.
