New RED camera?

So what's the crop factor compared to full frame- and by full frame I mean something like the A7s.

I'll stick with the ursa mini 4.6. Larger sensor, global shutter., non proprietary cheaper media, better compression, flip out lcd included, pl/ef mount, and affordable eyepiece. Ravens just a gateway camera to get you in their proprietary system

Beats any camera out there for the price.

Every camera in that price bracket has pros and cons, as will RED's offering. To say that one will "beat" another is pointless... It will have some better specs, some worse specs, depending on the user.

These judgments need to be reserved until post-released cameras go under user testing and review. Specs alone do not mean very much. Both the DVX200 and C300II boast 120fps but user accounts say these modes are soft and disappointing.

Also I would agree with the earlier statement as the camera is a pathway into an ecosystem. $850 for 120GB of recording media?

Everything does need to be tested before blanket statements are made.

But it is a Dragon sensor with Dragon pixels recording to REDCODE @4k. All of those are known entities where performance is concerned.

Another thing I just thought of - since RAVEN is a 4k camera with no 5k+ "stills" mode to worry about, its possible that they have built enough throughput in the body to keep compression down as you reach higher frame rates. It avoids the, "if it can do 4k @ 120fps why can't it do 5k @ 24fps," problem.

I've only had experience with MX, but the 4K was not very detailed, as the OLPF was very strong. ISO left alot to be desired too. I have heard similar with the Dragon, though the new OLPF might change things.

Dragon is the newest generation of sensor as you know - MX comparisons while they may provide a base are far from the be all and end all.

I don't see people comparing Canon, Nikon, or Sony sensors from 2009 around here too often... Although I think that MX in the hands of those that know how to use it provides exceptional results, can be exceptionally sharp, and when exposed correctly exceptionally clean. Sorry you didn't have that experience.

Wonder if they'll come out with a lower priced EVF for it...

So far I've come up with this...

5,950 brain...
1,700 two ssd cards... lol no clue about the recording times yet...
1,030 2 sets of DSMC 2 batts and 2 charagers have no clue about how long they last..
1,450 display
10,130

is my guess based off of prices of things on Red.com...

probably a few misc things in there that would be needed

Thanks for posting. So:

Black Magic Ursa mini 4.6k $5,496
Red Raven (ready to shoot) $9,595
Canon C300 Mk II $15,999

That's a lot of great choices at a big range of price points. Fantastic!
This is a silly price comparison. You just compared a ready to shoot Red Raven to a not ready to shoot Ursa Mini and C300 Mark II. C300 Mark II ready to shoot is around $20k and Ursa Mini ready to shoot is, oh, I haven't looked as much, maybe around $10k.

I"m not sure what you mean. Red is modular, Black Magic and Canon are not. You cannot buy a Canon or Black Magic "brain" only. you can't really compare apples to apples. Black Magic comes with a flip out screen, not an EVF and of course you'll want an EVF, but Red Raven has no screen just a "brain" and you can't use it at all until you get an EVF.

It's about 8k for the Ursa 4.6k after the viewfinder, storage, and batteries. So... 2k difference? Either way, my sights are on the FS5. Not a big fan of the ergonomics and aesthetics of RED. They look like what Affliction is to clothing but in camera form.

Andree included the cost of media, Touch monitor, and batteries to go from $6000 to $10,000 for a bare bones ready to shoot package for the Raven.

The Ursa Mini and C300 Mark II do not come with free batteries and media (aside from one small battery that comes with the C300 Mark II), and the Ursa Mini doesn't come with a viewfinder which is an extra $1500. For both cameras you need CFast cards which are about $680 for 256 GB which doesn't get you a whole lot of record time in 4K, so figure on four of them for $2700 for media. Unless you already own a lot of Anton Bauer or V-mount batteries for your Ursa Mini, figure on $1000-$2000 for batteries and chargers. Then the C300 Mark II batteries figure on spending $1300. That puts the price of the Ursa Mini at $10,000-$11,000 and C300 Mark II at $20,000 for a ready to shoot package.

Depending on what you shoot and your willingness to format cards during a shoot (which you really shouldn't be doing) you may be able to get away with less memory, though.

...and I wouldn't be surprised if BMD responded by dropping the price of the 4.6k mini before shipment because they can ;)
