I am not a huge fan of this hype but I'll be very pleased I'd this cam features a 35mm sensor.

I wouldn't care if it only shot 1080/2k, either.

But alas, tomorrow is soon. And then we can wait some more for the actual camera!

NO MORE RED ONE ?? ITS GOING TO BE IN THE HISTORY BOOK FOR SURE.

The RED ONE. Obsolescence Obsolete.

We love the RED ONE... and its owners. When Peter Jackson shot 1st prototypes "Boris" and "Natasha" in New Zealand last year, it was the thrill of a lifetime for all of us at RED. "Crossing the Line" inspired many people to believe that the RED ONE could be used on the highest level productions and capture incredibly clean and "filmic" images. We have supported our RED ONE customers with firmware and hardware upgrade after upgrade, all at no charge. We have always treated RED ONE owners as we would want to be treated. We will continue to do so.

We promised that we would make "Obsolescence Obsolete". In our minds, when we released the RED ONE, we imagined that we would offer an upgrade for the RED ONE sensor as technology and innovation improved.* We will honor that promise. Along with the announcement of Scarlet and EPIC is a sensor upgrade for the RED ONE.

What we hadn't imagined back then was a way to make "Obsolescence Obsolete" a much more broad concept. With Scarlet and Epic... it means being able to upgrade EVERYTHING as technology advances. Every component, on an individual level, can be upgraded and improved. The RED ONE is a modular system that can be upgraded. Scarlet and EPIC are completely modular and upgradeable in every way.

So what happens to the RED ONE owner with the release of Scarlet and EPIC? What about our promise? Since we have found a way to make Scarlet and EPIC upgradeable and interchangeable in every way, we decided that "Obsolescence Obsolete" applies to the RED ONE camera as we envisioned it in the beginning. But it now also applies to the RED ONE owner .

A RED ONE owner has several choices.

1. A RED ONE owner can keep the RED ONE and upgrade to the Mysterium-X sensor for a TBD price... just as we promised.

2. A RED ONE owner can purchase any EPIC and trade in their RED ONE for full $17,500 value towards the purchase... just as we promised.

3. A RED ONE owner can choose to keep their RED ONE and receive a one-time credit of 12% on a Scarlet system purchase.

Once any of the above has been chosen, the serial number will be marked as "Executed". It can not be used again for #2 or #3. It can, however, always be eligible for another sensor upgrade as we release new sensor technology in the future.

A RED ONE owner also has priority on purchasing a Scarlet or EPIC. Beyond the new Mysterium-X sensor option we will continue to offer firmware upgrades, service and parts for the RED ONE. It has become the legacy of RED. We will never forget the camera and those that believed in RED with their purchase of the now famous, RED ONE.

Am I the only one foreseeing a hellstorm from RED owners? That sounds like a cushion for the fall. Which means they're about to release something that's more than good enough for most RED owners that took the plunge just to get to that level of image quality.

Scarlet rental rates are also going to undercut the RED ONE if its got enough core features (EX1 features) to shoot with. And then they can't renig on the best features thanks to the canon and nikon threat.

I await torrow with sadistic glee.

I am with Kholi. This means the only development available for Red One owner in the future is the sensor upgrade while Scarlet and Epic future is LIMITLESS due to the modular design.

Ouch! So truE man. I wonder what the selling point could be for Red One over scarlet aside from the Sensor upgrade?

So does that mean the RED ONE is done?

Either way, sucks for those that have a RED. Since the only upgrade is the Epic which I think was originally priced at 80k.

I doubt done. But the used market may go nucking futs. I imagine that hey have to have some sort of failsafe sales pitch to save the loyal red owners.

I think Scarlet is going to be 35mm sensor and available initially with a fixed 35mm zoom lens to cushion the Red One owners. Then, in next upgrade, since everything is modular, Red will release an interchangeable lens module that allows us to use any 35mm lens.

As of now Red One owners have quite a few options - (these may change as of tomorrow)

They can keep shooting with their kick a** camera as is.

They can upgrade the sensor (and continue to do so in the future)

Or they can trade in their camera for a rebate of $17.5K towards an Epic (which was originally spec'd at 40K, by the way, not 80k).

I'm not sure what else RED could possibly offer them.
I've never heard of a company offering you a full price rebate when they come out with a new camera - and RED is even extending that to second hand owners of the RED One.

Guess I added another 40k to the camera. I haven't followed it really. 40 and 80 look a lot alike....kinda.

By the post that came before, it sounded as if the Red one was going to be done.

I think the extended rebate us to soften the blow and create resale value one scarlet is announced. Makes even more sense after Jims recent post.

This reminds me of Steven Dempsey (disjecta) and his xlh1. Once he saw the quality of the A1 he "downgraded" from the H1 and recouped some funds. To be honest, I would have done the same thing and Im sure REd One owners are already thinking the same thing. If the smaller version is enough and less than half the price, why not?

I call IMS similar system with Red proprietary interchangeables. I hope that's what it is. My cy Swiss may have quite the home.
