someone fill me in, this RED Scarlet is supposed to be a pro level camera for under $3000, correct? anyone think the picture quality of the Scarlet will be above other cameras at that level?

Since Scarlet is the ultimate definition of vaporware, sure, what the heck, the Scarlet will blow everything under $25k out of the water! It will the most amazing thing since sex was invented! Scarlet will be capable of parting the RED Sea (pun intended). Scarlet will be better than your wife or girfriend.

I have to hand it to Jim and company, they have taken hype to whole new level. An announcement two weeks ago to announce the next announcement. This is insane. Get a hold of yourselves RED fanboys. Rivet your shoes to the ground and come back down to reality. Scarlet is a color at this point, not a camcorder.

how can any of these images excite anyone? They show absolutely nothing. Is RED becoming Apple or something with all this over hype of nothing..

Just get the fixed details out and non of this subject to change nonsense. How else can we make an educated decision is the tool is best for our job?

Where have you been? Hype and waiting have been signature RED product strategy since the beginning. Once the specs are released just get ready for about a year of "i can't wait for scarlett" posts. :)

I see no fanboys around this thread... Yes, they're all over the Scarlet forum, and that's why I don't post there, but at DVXuser, everyone seems to already be down to earth about Scarlet. Hence why these threads never get out of control like they do over there. I'm excited to hear the news, but I do know I can't wait a year for an upgrade. Someone (nikon, canon, etc) will come out with a camera that will suit my needs before then, hopefully.

I hear you, it's nuts over there. To me, RED fanboys are not the RED One owners, they are all of the posters that think that Scarlet will be the ultimate video nirvana for $3,000.00 and are anxiously holding out for it, you know, the "should I wait for Scarlet to buy a camera" type of posters? It's not even a design concept yet, much less a camera. I am sure that it will be really cool if and when it ever hits but until then, you have to live in reality and use the tools that we have today to create your work.

Nobody outside of RED now knows anything about the design concept, the new price, etc. It is less than vapor, it is the pre-announcement of vapor.

I started getting less excited about RED once I actually used the camera and was unimpressed. A lot of people are unimpressed with the unit. I guess maybe I am a diehard in higher end digital cinema and film.

But no one should hold for scarlet. That is like someone holding for the new 4K CineAlta that was announced as on the design board. No one knows what it is. No one knows what it looks like. No one knows how it works.

RED is great at marketing and causing a stir. When the scarlet info is announced I wouldn't be expecting anything real to ship until 2010 at the earliest.

I have shot with the RED once, I was happy with the images but the workflow sucks. Having to shoot in 4k to obtain 35mm depth of field is a real bummer. I think the camera holds a lot of potential but yes, the rolling shutter artifacts, while not nearly as bad the EX1/3 cameras, are still there. The RED One is not practical for really any kind of shooting short of "filmmaking" with a crew.

Not my normal shooting situation, I rarely get the budgets for a crew and when I do, it's usually for a DP, gaffer or grip and a sound mixer, not for a DIT/card wrangler.

I think a lot of what you said is pretty much negative waste. There is a great chance that Scarlet will be the best possible camera for the price, which atm seems to be $3k. Not even a concept design? Lol what's your definition of concept design? Because by my definition it most certainly is one, it may take RED more time to release images or confirmed specs, but thats due to the fact the company constantly changes in order to improve on what it is doing.

Sure, I can't say that the next announcement is going to be anything more than just 'ideas' that may or may not change by the time the camera is released. But there is also the possibility it will be real info, possibly more specs, design images, and even dates, so lets wait a few days and see, not just hate.

Not everyone is a cam operator, dp, etc that must go into production this week, and no one is blasting those who do and use the current equipment available. People are just excited over RED making a camera that everyone can afford, they came through with flying colors on the RED ONE and if they continue the same path they will be blowing things sky high.

And in regards to working with RED ONE I think many people would disagree with you. As long as those people have a technical clue about the camera, sure it may not be the pop outta the box and go to work situation, but with some knowledge about the actual camera things can be as smooth and easy as ever.

And those 'less than vapor' comments are pointless, its just hate on Scarlet.

Hi Kubrick:

I think that you are taking many of my comments to literally. I am not hating on the Scarlet, if it's any good I am sure that I will end up buying one. How can I hate on a question mark? Seriously, at this point, is Scarlet anything more than a question mark? I am just trying to deflate the pointless mental masturbation that all of us have been suckered into about a product that does not exist yet. Vaporware is hardware that has been announced but does not yet exist, I just find it hilarious that Scarlet can't even be considered vaporware yet because it's true that today, November 7, 2009, Scarlet as a design concept doesn't exist for anyone outside the RED offices. So I guess if we want to be correct, we could call it pre-vaporware?

I am glad that Jim and Co. can turn on a dime and it was probably a smart move to hit the self-destruct button on the NAB 2008 Scarlet specs.

I am sure that most RED One owners would disagree with me about using the RED One but I, as an image creator, find the workflow cumbersome and the post workflow a relative PITA. I have interviewed numerous other DPs. ACs and Editors/Post Supers and the general consensus I have heard is that while the images are great (which I agree, they are), capturing the images, processing and down rezing, using the various RED and third party apps is a decided PITA. For me and my projects at least. If I was shooting film sort of project, and had the crew, time and resources to manage the workflow, I would probably adore the camera but as it stands today, I would buy an HPX2700 because it would fit with what I do better (small crew doc, small crew television).

If you hang out on RED User at all, you cannot deny that there are too many foamers on the Scarlet boards ;-)

Dan

It's vapor until proven innocent.

Red hasn't passed anything with flying colors.

Red is not the end all and will likely bs you again with another asterisk sign in however long they plAn to wave some 3D renderings in your face. In fact, the entire campaign should be one big really well rendered asterisk sign.

I shoot RED, I'm impressed every time I turn on the camera. I am not impressed every time they turn on the hypemachine.

Ok, so the RED is one phenomenal camera for those with the time and skill to use it properly.

It was created by an entrepreneur that makes sunglasses that cost more than my car. If that doesn't define hype . . .

What did you expect? Scarlet will come when it comes. In the meantime enjoy the show!

I bet you $200 it ends up looking like a f*cking camera. Any takers?

Not hating on RED, just stating that this tease will simply reveal the obvious. I agree with Kholi.
