New PIX-E recorders/monitors from Sound Devices

And it seems the NX1 is 8-bit 420 internally and 8-bit 422 over HDMI, so a small improvement too.

Thanks for the feedback.

Just to clarify - these PIX-E recorders will immediately convert to Pro-Res? Like, even the NX1's H265 will be recorded as Pro-Res 422? No more having to use Wondershare or Rocky Mountain Movie Converter?

That pretty much nails it on the head.

You get 220Mbps - Less Macro Blocking ...

220Mbps in 1080 ProRes HQ, right?

The latest 4K 4444 ProRes XQ is way faster than that, as it comes out to about 1TB/HR compared to ~ 78 GB in 1080 442 HQ.

This depends on the type of the HDMI too, obviously. IIRC, C300 MK II is 2.0a, that can do 4K 60p. Older connections can do only 30p.

These things are so complete that we should have camera heads with controls for aperture, iso, frame rate and a hdmi out. It is 90% of a camera.

I have wondered the same thing.

It's sort of a "digital back" concept from the medium format world and should be entirely doable.

What would Mitch Gross think about that?

We'll that's sort of how BlackMagic started. They were already good with making recorders. Just add a screen and a camera to it and presto, the 2.5K camera is born.

It's true that all Sound Devices need is a camera so you never know. You could also see companies such as Atomos and and Convergent Design doing the same one day.

Samuel, that is far away to be a small improvement, actually... (E :-)

Yes, that's a huge difference, but that's a shot that has been graded specifically to produce that effect. I've never seen anything like that in normal use, even though I grade all my footage, sometimes relatively aggressively.

Still, on the pre-grade screenshot (from a few seconds before yours, in that same video) I see some issues already, so yes, for a GH4 maybe it is a relatively big improvement (not because of 420, which is not the cause of this, but because of the internal codec being subject to this kind of issues).

It will be a strange situation in the coming years. On one side you will have companies doing recorders that are 90% of a camera and on the other side you will have camera that will need less and less recorders because they will have everything internal like higher bitrate, bit depth etc. I think that is why Black magic went into the camera business. You just need a camera war like they themselves have started for the recorder manufacturers to be squeezed. Suffice to say that everyone because of BM decides to give higher bitrate and RAW internal, what will be left of the Atomos and Odyssey.

The 'split camera' is an idea that has always appealed to me and is basically where I am probably going with my B camera.

BMCmini or IO4k + recorder.

This enables..
-using the head on a gimbal/crane/fridge mount

-Upgrading the cam/chip without throwing away the recorder.

You may laugh but there is no mechanical advantage for anything more than the chip and the lens being on a gimbal (for example)

From a marketing perspective, splitting the camera in two - or even three parts, if you remove the monitor as in Atomos Ninja Star and BMD Hyperdeck Shuttle - gives a customer an ability to mix and match components based on a given need and learn the more affordable cameras before moving onto to the higher end models.

The closest to this concept currently is A7s. Will others follow suit?
