Well This is my Questio
-The HVX has been out for a while now, does it look like Panasonic will bring out a simliar Camera to the HVX any time soon¿

I plan on purchasing one but im afraid that when i purchase it a month later Panasonic will bring out something new. maybe drop the whole P2 idea.
And my $7000 Aus Dollars will be wasted on an out of date camera, i know its hard to beleave that something so awesome like HVX can go out of date so quickly but u can be surprized.

let me know what you think.

Well you got to ask yourself, why are you planning on purchasing the camera soon? Do you have work lined up to shoot? Is it just for a hobby? Are you going to shoot your next short or feature with it? Do you really need it now?
There will always be new technology coming down the pipeline and what you buy today will undoubtedly devalue some by tomorrow. As for it going out of date, while networks are broadcasting material in HD and people are watching HD DVD's the HVX wont go out of date. Will there be another camera on the market soon that will do what the HVX does and more? You better believe it. Should that affect your decision to purchase today? Refer to the questions above. I know people that own 10-15 year old beta sp cameras that are still making money with them and shooting some great looking footage.

You can relax. The HVX200 will continue in production just as it is for quite some time. And since we do have three new cameras coming out in 2007 with P2 as their base, you will not see P2 go away for a long time to come. Those are should-mount cameras, so the factory is busy making something new but it isn't a new HVX.

Hope that helps,

jan

Three new cameras? HVX500 and HPX2000 -- what's the third?

The HVX has only been out for 7 months in Australia, so it's still current and isn't going to be replaced any time soon! And keep in mind that it can be updated with some new features via a firmware update, so it's not like the DVX where the only way to update it was to come out with a new model (DVX100A, DVX100B, etc). There are obviously limitations on what a firmware update can accomplish, so I'm not saying that there won't someday be an HVX200A or B or whatnot, but I'm saying that the ability to do a firmware update may mean that the current model stays current longer.

With that said, of course there will be a replacement someday. Nobody here knows when that day is, but there's always a new model coming, there's always new features that are going to be added, etc. So buy what you need when you need it. If you don't need it, don't buy it until you do. And when you do need it, get the best that's available at that time.

And if you can afford to spend some more, keep an eye on that HPX500 -- they're promising everything the HVX does, but in a 2/3" shoulder-mount form factor with four P2 slots and interchangeable lenses, and with variable frame rates...

The definitive answer to when a new model will appear-- the day after you've bought yours.

Time to move on folks...

Ah, so there's yet another surprise coming... interesting...
What do u rate the HVX Barry out of ten
Price -
Picture quality -
Looks -
Operations - (how fun is it to work with)

kezza - I have been working on the HVX for a year now.
It is 10 / 10 /10 / 10 - ........why do I say that ?
Simple - right now there is not other camera in the world that does what it does at that price.
Variable frame rates - got it
tapeless work flow - got it
4.2.2 - got it
DV tape backup - got it
Multiple HD formats - got it

The only limitation with this camera is the user. So stop waiting around - go and get one and start making movies - docs - whatever...........or wait for something else to come out with more features.............ummmmmm but what else could you want.
Remember a new cam is only going to make you rush to buy an hvx because it is going to dawn on you that the HVX is so well priced and a new cam that matches or exceeds it will be more than double the price - you can bank on that!

Good luck mate!

Haha well Said.
Thanks for the info.
I haven't heard anything bad about this camera.

Man if you are talking about "bang for your buck" its definitely the HVX. So many pros and not alot of cons. Does alot for the price, I hope they improve future versions. I already have 2, wouldn't mind a third. Maybe the HVX200a will have the ability to ramp variable frame rates on the fly. And what would it take for Panasonic to develop a 2/3" handheld?

Would be nice to actually know the difference b/t the HDX900 and the HPX2000 aside from one being P2 and the other tape. Presumably variable frames with the 2000? There's little to differentiate based on the press release today.

Jan is such a tease!
BTW, thanks again, Jan, for the HVX. I just finished shooting a feature with the HVX/M2 combo, and the editor is going crazy over the images! He can't believe how good it looks. He's tellin' everyone about this camera. Let's hope that means more work for me (fingers crossed).
